Puremagnetik has released two new plugins: Drejin, a unique granular envelope FX, and Aperuit, a mystical drone Synthesizer.

Designing plugins is a philosophy in itself. Every developer has their ideas about how a plugin should look and operate. Many devs try to pack as many features as possible into a new release. Some even overdo it.

The plugins from Micah Frank, aka Puremagnetik, are a nice contrast—minimal controls for maximum fun. The latest two releases confirm this again nicely.

Puremagnetik Drejin & Aperuit

Two new plugin releases. One is part of the Puremagnetik subscription service (later back-catalog), and one is available exclusively with music from Bandcamp.

Drejin

Let’s start with Drejin. It’s a unique synchronized granular FX processor based on an innovative concept. Routing in audio triggers a granular cloud based on specified thresholds and envelopes.

Drejin features 11 controls, giving you precise control over the granular process. Including:

  • input and threshold
  • attack, duration, and decay control the envelope
  • repeat: delay feedback amount
  • speed: delay rate of the grain cloud
  • size: grain particle size between 0.01 and 2 seconds
  • length: how much the playback buffer is accessed (short stutters or longer buffer playbacks)
  • echo: amount of grain cloud sent to the delay
  • cloud: rate of playback without altering pitch
  • density: grain cloud density (how many particles sound at once)

There is also a jumble control for random patch generation. It’s particularly fun to have such a function with plugins like this. So you always get new, inspiring results. Puremagnetik says it can create unique textural swells, ambient spaces, and granular slap-back reflections.

What you can hear in the demo sounds interesting. It’s fresh and not comparable with traditional granular processors.

Aperuit

Already in begin of January, the music production duo Larum published a new live EP (Live at Public Records | The Music of Hildegard von Bingen on the Puremagnetik label.

The PM team has created Aperut, a new drone Synthesizer plugin powered by twisted FM synthesis to celebrate this release. It offers 10 different “macro”-style controls, each offering a wealth of functions.

  • realm: modulation timbre of the carrier voice
  • mod: index variations in the mod frequency for subtle overtones
  • rise: offsets the synchronization between the carrier and modulator oscillators
  • burn: modifies the pitch ratio of the modulating frequency
  • dark: Moog-style lowpass filter
  • sub: attenuates a -1oct oscillator to conjure the depths of barren wastelands
  • onset: amplitude envelope onset
  • trail: amplitude envelope decay and release
  • orb and earth: interesting phase and space offsets

Aperut is designed to create mystical twisted drones and haunting woodwind melodies.

First Impression

Two fascinating, experimental budget-friendly plugins with which you can dive in new sonic worlds.

Puremagnetik Drejin is available now as a part of their monthly device membership for $9/month or $89/year. After one month, it will be available in the back catalog for $25.

Aperuit comes with the new album from Larum “The Music of Hildegard von Bingen, Live at Public Records” available for $1 (name-your-price) on Bandcamp. It’s available until January 20th, 2024. Both releases run as VST, VST3, and AU plugins on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
