UVI Noctua is a new cinematic virtual synth instrument for Falcon 3 and UVI Player made in collaboration with Venus Theory; it’s a free download.
The Christmas season is the time when developers give you the most gifts or at least good discounts on their products. So far there have been some nice free plugins for Christmas.
UVI kicks also off the Holiday season with a new free instrument release.
UVI Noctua
Noctua is a new free virtual cinematic instrument created in collaboration with sound designer and YouTuber Venus Theory. It’s an instrument for the UVI Falcon 3 and the free UVI Player. So everyone can explore the new instrument even without the flagship synth Falcon 3.
The latest UVI virtual instrument is powered by a multi-layer engine that hosts hand-crafted samples by Venus Theory. According to UVI, it features inspiring soundscapes and evocative cinematic worlds created from combinations of hardware synths and boutique effects.
At Notua’s core is a flexible 2+1 layer architecture. The instrument consists of three layers, two of them uses multi-sampled content available in three categories: effects box (effected, granularized sounds), analog (recordings from analog synths + pedals), and EMF (electronic-magnetic field recordings).
The first layer is a morphable sub-oscillator that delivers a rich and powerful low-end. Free doesn’t have to mean stripped-down. This library has familiar features from other commercial UVI libraries.
This can be seen in the layers. Each layer has its own microtonal sequencer with unique randomization and probability options. There is also filtering for the layers as well as modulation.
Noctua also features selection of one-knob FX chains. You get per-layer reverb and delay send effects and helpful master bus processing. The latter includes a compressor, an overdrive, EQ, and maximizer to finalize your sounds.
UVI ships the virtual instrument/library with 100 presets designed by Venus Theory and the in-house sound design team.
First Impression
At first glance, an exciting free instrument from UVI and Venus Theory. It certainly doesn’t feature bread and butter sounds. Here the focus is heavily on exceptional, elaborate sound design. If you want cinematic sounds for free, you’ve come to the right place. One downer: you need a free iLok software account.
UVI Noctua is available now as a free download. It requires UVI Falcon 3 or the free UVI Player. It runs as a 64-bit VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows. It also requires a software iLok account.
