You can dive into electronic music production almost for free these days. All you need is a computer, whether Windows, Mac, or Linux. DAWs and synthesizers, effects, and mixing/mastering plugins are available in huge quantities for free in high quality.

My list of the best free synthesizers and effects, updated regularly, provides a good overview. A new one is being added to the Synthesizer list today with ToneZ v2 from Retornz.

ToneZ is a new, free, cross-platform Synthesizer plugin with an impressive feature set. Visually, the GUI is not a feast for the eyes, but it is easy to use and straightforward. That’s the most important thing for a UI.

The core consists of four oscillators, each with two selectable waveforms. You can either load classic waves or custom shapes. Twenty extra waves are included. On top of that, you can generate waveforms in a dedicated manager. In this, you can transform .wav samples into ToneZ waveforms.

Once loaded, you can tweak, detune, stack the voices up to 8, and morph the waveforms. There is also a stereo-width control option.

From here, it goes into two filters with flexible routing options. You can select exactly which oscillators go in or not in the filters. They offer low, high, and bandpass modes with key tracking and filter drive options.

To refine your sounds, it offers a complete multi-fx section with six customizable algorithms: distortion, chorus, delay, reverb, and compressor.

On the modulation side, ToneZ offers four envelopes with custom curves and two LFOs with six waveshapes. It’s a shame you cannot upload your custom waveforms here; maybe in a future update. A modulation matrix manages all this.

Retornz ships the synth plugin with over 100 ready-to-play presets. According to the developer, it supports your ToneZ V1 presets. Additionally, you get portamento with glide and trigger options.

First Impression

At first glance, it’s a mighty free Synthesizer plugin. I’m glad it’s also available for Linux so everyone can benefit from it.

Retornz ToneZ V2 is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST, VST3, and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
