K-Devices is known to most as the developer of numerous Max For Live devices. Plugins and iOS apps followed. In 2022, they introduced Magma, the first plugin in their new totem series. Experimental concepts characterize this.

Magma is not a classic multi-FX plugin. It uses an interesting chain of effects to generate numerous textures. Secta, the second FX plugin from the totem series is now available.

Secta is a new novel effect plugin in the totem series that dynamically splits incoming audio into two sections (top/bottom). It’s an effect processor based on the concept of a multi-dimensional gate.

The core of the process is the envelope that controls the top and bottom sections, adjustable with the verge control. With smooth you can shape it in different directions. Boost increases the input level, and drift adds a short randomic delay that injects tuning instability in the input signal.

There are three operation modes: in direct mode, the envelopes for L and R drive the respective amplitude. In crossed mode, the envelopes for L and R drive opposite channels’ amplitude, and in summed mode, the summed L and R envelopes drive both channel’s amplitude.

Then, you have drive, lowpass/highpass filter, volume, and settings on each side. Other features are:

  • retain – prolong envelope’s fall by adding randomic bursts
  • melt – smear the bottom section
  • sidechain – amplify the top envelope to add ducking to button section

Secta doesn’t offer dry/wet mix so you always experience the full dose of the effect on your audio signals. Interesting design choice. It also hosts a handy lock parameter feature that locks key parameters while browsing presets.

It is a special effect with an unusual mix of effects and tools. The results are just as intriguing. You can infuse in sounds an ephemeral and dramatic touch, delicately dissolving loops, create abrupt drops, reimagining your melodies, and more. You can also route any sound into dark paths of fragmentation.

K-Devices says:

it’s an exclusive kit of effects sculpting silence, shaping accents and amplifying hidden details, guiding each layer into a parallel sonic dimension. A sound-designer (unforeseen) dream.

First Impression

It’s a fascinating experimental effects plugin. The dropouts remind me of faulty electronics, which leads to instability, artifacts, and stutter glitchy elements. But in an extreme but controlled form. Secta creates very beautiful gated textures that take every sound in new directions. It’s a lovely release, and I hope it comes soon to iOS AUv3.

K-Devices Secta is available now for an introductory price of 19€ instead of 39€. It runs as a VST and AU plugin on macOS (Intel + native Apple Silicon) and Windows.
