Oms In Serial FM Einheit, a 2-OP FM synth voice, hardware and free VCV Rack module

Oms In Serial has released FM Einheit, a new Daisy Patch-based 2-operator FM synth voice, available as a hardware or free VCV Rack module.

The most affordable way to explore the workflow and the infinite worlds of the Eurorack modular world is VCV Rack. It’s a free, open-source tool that imitates Eurorack with virtual modules, patch cables, etc. Cardinal is a clone of it with a focus on being a plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Many developers design new modules for the platform, for free or for cash. Even module manufacturers like Befaco offer their modules as a virtual version. There are also developers who go the opposite way, like Vult DSP. He comes from VCV Rack and ports his modules to the real Eurorack world. Well, he is not alone in this. Oms in Serial has now done both. A new module in hardware and software.

FM Einheit is a new 2-operator FM synthesis module. The core is based on the Eurorack-Blocks framework, allowing you to develop custom Eurorack modules using C++ code, Faust language, or Cycling ’74 Max.

The power comes from the ElectroSmith Daisy Patch Submodule, an all-in-one STM32 processor-based DSP platform with high-fidelity stereo audio codex, and more.

FM Engine

2 operators FM doesn’t sound like much. It isn’t, but thanks to the flexible engine and full modularity, the whole thing can be expanded to a 6 OP, 8 OP, and more FM synth. You need more modules that you connect together. So you can patch almost every algorithm you dream about right in your rack.

FM Einheit has classic parameters that you can find in every FM synth. Only here is very immediate and tangible with knobs and cv-controllable: frequency – fine-tune, index 1, index 2, ratio 1, ratio 2, FM1 in depth, FM2 in depth, harm, and operator mix. Plus, there are also depth parameters available with a shift function.

On the connection side, there are CV inputs for the parameters, V/oct input, and an oscillator 1 and mix output.

VCV Rack

Anyone who is a busy patcher in VCV Rack can also benefit from the release. Oms in Serial has released a free VCV Rack version of its FM Einheit synth voice. This gives you all the functions for your virtual rack.

First Impression

A nice project from Oms in serial. The module looks very clearly designed and you can immediately see which functions are where. 2 operators are nothing super deep. Still, the concept is lovely that you can patch your own algorithms together in this way.

Oms In Serial FM Einheit is available now as a partial DIY kit (PCB + PCB front panel) for $16 and fully built for $133. You need to source the Daisy Patch Submodule yourself which costs $39,95 or 58€ in Europe. The free VCV Rack module is available on GitHub for macOS and Windows.
