Eventide Riptide combines ripping distortions and Uni-Vibe swirling modulations in a new hands-on H9 dot stereo effects pedal.

Eventide released the first pedal in the H9 dot series in 2020. It’s a series of compact pedals focusing on simplicity and hands-on control. Unlike the H9 or H90, these pedals only host one algorithm, which can then be controlled with knobs on the interface. For example, the Blackhole pedal gives you the famous atmospheric reverb from the H9/H90 in a much more user-friendly package.

Today, the H9 dot series has been expanded with another member. The Riptide brings distortions with vintage modulations together.

Eventide Riptide

Riptide is a new stereo FX processor with iconic lush Uni-Vibe modulation and legendary overdrives in a pedal. Riptide features not one but two distinct voices for each effect split on two sides.

You get a balanced distortion on the left side with optimized dynamics and touch sensitivity. You can choose between two colors: green is a dynamic, mid-range crunch, while red is a smooth and boosted overdrive. The pedal offers drive, tone, and level controls for adjusting the effect.

The home of modulation is on the right. It’s based on an authentic Shin-ei Uni-Vibe emulation that captures the richness and modulation of the original. Also, here, you get two flavors. Green is the traditional Uni-Vibe sound, and red is a deeper, phase-y vibe. The effect is tweakable with three parameters: vibe, speed, and intensity.

There is also a catch-up mode to dial in your sound when toggling between presets/parameters. Cool, you can also swap the order of the effects, giving you more flexibility.

Up to five patches can be easily stored in the pedal. If you need more, no problem. Eventide ships the pedal with the Eventide Device Manager (EDM), allowing you to store almost infinite number of patches.

The Riptide pedal features a dual-action active footswitch for latching or momentary workflows.

Connectivity

On the backside, you get a mono/stereo input on a 6.3mm socket, a stereo output, and an expression pedal input. On the last one, you can map any number of parameters, giving tons of options to play the effect expressively. Plus points for the guitar/line level switch for matching impedances with guitar, synths, FX loop, or DAW interface. I would like to see that on every pedal.

Riptide also has full MIDI support over the USB socket or TRS socket with Type A support.

First Impression

Even though there are many synth demos, I can see this pedal working very well with electronic sounds. Distortions and modulations harmonize well with synths. The big plus, Riptide is in stereo, so it would also fit the signal paths of modern synths. In terms of sound, I like the effects of Eventide’s new H9 dot pedal.
