Sampleson SkyWaves is a new multi-layer cinematic soundscapes creator plugin based on modeled analog sound sources.
In March, I reported on Sandstorm by Sampleson. This is a super easy-to-use virtual instrument that gives you instant evolving soundscapes.
Today the developers are expanding this series with another instrument with Skywaves. This goes deeper and is strongly reminiscent of a classic synth.
Sampleson SkyWaves
SkyWaves is a new multi-layer cinematic soundscapes creator plugin with analog color. The latter comes from the sound source it uses. These are modeled analog sources combined with a wavetable oscillator, giving you a total of four layers. Sampleson says:
Dive into meticulously crafted analog waveforms that carry an authentic character and depth. Born from precise modeling of analog oscillators, these waveforms deliver dynamic signals that evoke the spirit of vintage synthesis.
This is very easy to use from the macro side. If you want to delve deeper, you can edit each layer individually.
Each “analog synth” layer consists of saw/square waveforms, noise, various oscillator controls, a filter, two envelopes, LFO, and FX send section. There is also an arpeggiator. Then, it hosts a wavetable oscillator with various built-in waves and controls, a filter, two ADSR envelopes, and an FX send section.
All four sound layers then move on to a multi-FX section. Sampleson also describes them as analog FX. You get here reverb, shimmer, and delay as effects giving you instant cinematic soundscapes vibes.
SkyWaves supports real-time performance and multitrack mixing through MIDI CC controls. The macro control, assignable to MIDI CC or mouse drag, ensures you can shape your sound on the fly. For example, you can morph sounds directly on the macro page with the mouse.
First Impression
You all sound pretty good. In terms of features, however, it reminds me more of a classic virtual analog Synthesizer combined with a wavetable part packed in a multi-layer instrument. The name “Cinematic Soundscapes Creator” sounds like a lot; in reality, it’s four synths packed together in a plugin.
Sampleson SkyWaves is available now for an introductory price of $39 instead of $59 (regular price). It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (Intel + native Apple Silicon) and Windows.
