The time of the free plugins for Christmas is in full swing. I recently reported about the Overloud Gem Mod plugin, a Roland Dimension-D emulation, which was free for a limited time. Arturia has today released Tape MELLO-FI, a new instant lo-fi and vintage warmth texture generator. For Christmas, you can download the plugin for free but only for a limited time.
The Lo-Fi topic fits in perfectly with the current times. Many developers are currently releasing tape-inspired effects. See Waves with Retro FI, Baby Audio TAIP, IK Multimedia T-RackS TASCAM Tape Collection … and now Arturia.
The Lo-Fi Trend
The reason why lo-fi / tape plugins are currently so popular is probably due to the boom of vintage / retro devices. They have something wobbly, warm and moving that modern synths and effects often don’t have.
This new batch of interesting modern-retro tape plugins shows that many developers follow the topic in great detail and incorporate many interesting ideas. Baby Audio’s TAIP, for example, uses artificial intelligence.
Arturia Tape MELLO-FI
In the case of the french developers, the Tape MELLO-FI’s uses behaviour and sound modeling technologies from their Mellotron V plugin, Arturia’s own software recreation of the legendary Mellotron instrument. All these sonic aspects are built into a standalone, easy-to-use effect plugin that brings instant atmospheres and vintage-tape
Tape MELLO-FI features a preamp section with drive, tone and noise control as well as a VU meter. The section adds the desired heat and warmth to the signal. With less or more noise for a sound full of character.
In the tape section, you can find all the lovely sonic aspects from vintage tape machines and of the Mellotron. You get control over the flutter, wow, wear, and mechanics. The Mechanics, in particular, are a lot of fun adding to a sound. And the developers expanded the concept by adding an enhanced stereo with functionality. This creates some nice offers to wow & flutter from left to right for extra-wide sounds.
There is also an interactive tape wheel with a tempo-syncronized tape stop feature. It also hosts an optional instant tape catch-up which is very unique. And on the output, you can uses an additional 12dB lowpass and high pass filter to filter the effect.
