Step sequencers have become an integral part of electronic music today and are used daily by musicians in the form of hardware or software. However, access to a step sequencer is often associated with purchasing a hardware device or commercial software, which is logical because step sequencer can not develop on it’s own.
The German developers of Gibbon Digital pursue a new concept with Modul, a web-based step sequencer and want to make it available to every musician without having to buy a specific product. To use the module you need a classic MIDI interface which many MIDI keyboard already have or many musicians already own.
Modul plays well with MIDI capable devices. Think of it as a brain dedicated to control your synthesizers, drum machines and samplers all at once. Because Modul is web-based, it runs on any device with Chrome support. The current version of Modul is for desktop use primarily. You can use Modul on your smartphone or tablet using Chrome and native apps are coming soon for iOS and Android.
Funding And Community Participation Via Patreon
To fund the project, Gibbon Digital has launched a Patreon campaign where users can get early access to Modul. Here musicians can participate with a minimum of $1 USD (access to Modul) or with $3 USD (access to Modul & vote for the next feature). So you can talk with which features to comes first. In my opinion an interesting other way to involve the community in the development. So you pay for each feature what is in my opinion a good decision so you know for what you are paying.
No MIDI Interface Available In The Studio? No Problem!
If you don’t have a MIDI interface yet but are interested in module, Gibbon Digital has also found a very good solution. If you donate a minimum of $ 79 USD, the T4 USB MIDI Interface gets sent home as well as a T-shirt. Additionally you get early access to the module. If you donate even $ 119 USD, there is a MIDI interface, a Goliath, a t-shirt as well as the name in the credits. A very exciting way to finance a new project in my opinion.
