Greybox Audio SG-323 is a new open-source, authentic emulation of the Ursa Major Stargate 323 reverb for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
Reverbs are popular effects in hardware and software (plugin) form. There are countless different reverbs. Some emulate vintage devices; others follow modern concepts such as granular reverb.
The Ursa Major Stargate 323 is one of the few hardware reverbs without emulation. That changed today. Greybox Audio, a new developer, has today published an emulation of this hardware unit.
Greybox Audio SG-323
SG-323 authentic emulates the vintage Ursa Major Stargate 323 reverb from 1984. According to Greybox Audio, it is based on over four years of work, including a detailed analysis of the original circuit logic, filters, and EPROM data.
The code is open-source and ships with the original feature set. It has eight reverb programs ranging from small plates to thunderous caves. It comes with a very straightforward, resizable UI. Input sets the source’s gain, LF and HF decay are lowpass and highpass filters, and mix a dry/wet mix control.
Then, you can fully adjust the reverb’s pre-delay and decay time, allowing you to customize the sound to the last detail. SG-323 enables the user to use the original, noisier character or a modern, cleaner character using the vintage and noise buttons.
As already mentioned, the code is open-source and available on GitHub. Thus, you can build the plugin with the code for free or buy a ready-to-use version.
First Impression
The reverbs sound great in the sound demo of an early beta version linked above. A new demo is not available. However, I can’t judge how close it is to the original. I’m glad there is now an emulation of this vintage hardware reverb—bonus points for the open source.
