Noise Engineering Granulita Versio expands the Versio platform with a new exciting granular chord resynthesizer algorithm.
Let’s stick with noise. Not noise in the sense of sound, but of a company, Noise Engineering. Versio is a compelling open-source effects platform that has been continually updated with new algorithms over the past few years.
So far, there are 10 algorithms that users can easily switch between with a few clicks via USB. For Christmas, we will release the 11th algorithm. Noise Engineering has released Granulita Versio, a module/algorithm that brings granular magic to the Versio platform.
Noise Engineering Granulita Versio
Granulita Versio is a new module and algorithm for the Versio DSP platform. According to Noise Engineering, Granulita Versio will likely be the last algorithm to receive a dedicated module version, and it will be limited to 100 units.
The module’s name reveals what’s behind the engine. Granulita Versio is a stereo granular chord resynthesizer that transforms simple audio inputs into lush, controllable chords.
It offers a range of parameters, giving you hands-on control over harmony, grain, and more. Blend through 16 different choices of chords/intervals, and a dedicated voice parameter sets the note that tracks the input.
The unquantized Pitch control acts as an offset for the entire resynthesizer. You can detune or transpose the output to create dissonant atmospheres, even more drastic harmonies, or ominous movement and vibrato.
Full CV Connectivity
Granulita’s interface also allows you to tweak the grain count and length to help you shape the sound you seek. Additionally, the verb parameter adds a unique shimmer reverb to your sounds.
Each of the eight parameters is manually adjustable or has a dedicated CV input, allowing for automation. There is a granular bonus you won’t want to miss.
The gate input and the corresponding hit button can be configured to perform different actions: freeze grain playback, sync grain timing to an external clock, or fire grain playback from an external trigger source.
As with the other Versio modules, the new Noise Engineering Granulita Versio is not just a new module but also a new algorithm for its DSP platform. Existing Versio customers can load this new granular algorithm with a simple USB connection to their module.
The platform is also open-source via libDaisy, allowing you to write your own firmware.
First Impression
I bought the Desmodus Versio a few years ago. It was one of the first modules in the series. I don’t regret the purchase at all, as the module has been continually reinvented with each new algorithm.
This new Granulita algorithm takes the cake and makes it even better. The granular chords and textures generated by the algorithm sound amazing. I’m looking forward to testing them.
Noise Engineering Granulita Versio is available now for $393.
