The new DB8E Droid module upgrades the powerful Droid system from Der Mann mit der Maschine by adding a display.
CV tools like modulators, sequencers, etc., are available as countless individual Eurorack modules. There are also multi-function modules that combine virtually everything into a single module, such as the Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4, O&C, and many others.
Der Mann mit Maschine takes a particularly unique approach to a multi-function module with their Droid system. This is an expandable, easily programmable system that lets you build custom CV tools. With the additional controller modules (E4…), you have hands-on control that just a few multi-tools offer.
What many have been missing is visual feedback on what’s happening in the module—whether the droids are actually doing what they were programmed to do.
The DB8E module now offers a solution: a display that shows what’s happening in the “Der Mann mit der Maschine” Droid system.
DB8E (Der Mann mit der Maschine)
The new DB8E controller module features a display, eight push buttons, and an endless push-encoder.
Once connected to the system, the Droid system recognizes the DB8E and displays valuable information about the functions running on your Droid, such as note values, curve characteristics, BPM, and more.
With the buttons and the encoder, you can navigate through the display information. For easy navigation, it also ships with a small sheet of stickers to personalize the buttons.
This display upgrade is beneficial when you want to see information such as BPM or the current running sequence, or when you want to adjust parameters like tuning precisely.
The new Der Mann mit der Maschine controller is not just a display expansion. Both the buttons and the encoder are fully customizable so that you can use them as regular controls for your Droid patch.
Not just one function, it can be more than that. Map different shortcuts to the buttons, and each time a button is pressed, the encoder gives you control over the selected function.
First Impression
A very welcome new controller for Der Mann mit der Maschine Droid system. I find the system very exciting, but I was always missing the visual feedback. This display finally provides that.
It’s a shame that it’s not part of the Master module, but at least there’s now a display upgrade available.
The DB8E for the Der Mann mit der Maschine Droid system is available now for $164,99/148€. It includes a short ribbon cable for connecting the controller to the master or to the previous controller.
