Sonicware ELZ_1 play v2 is the newest version of its multi-engine Synthesizer with Waldorf wavetables, new FXs, and more.

The first product from the young Japanese company Sonicware was the ELZ_1, unveiled at NAMM in 2018. The official release followed a year later. Initially discussed as an OP-1 clone, it was later discovered that the synth was different from the Swedish one.

With the ELZ_1 play, the developers reissued the Synthesizer in a new limited-edition model on request with additional features. The journey continues with the Sonicware ELZ_1 play firmware v2.

As a reminder: the ELZ_1 play v2 is a portable digital Synthesizer packed with inspiring engines. For me, the Sonicware ELZ_1 play v2 is a true multi-engine synth

Talking about engines. The new ELZ_1 play v2 features 18 unique synth engines—from gritty low-bit waveforms to ever-evolving wavetables—delivering a sonic palette found nowhere else.

Firmware 2.0 or v2 introduces a new layer mode that lets you stack up to three oscillators, giving you the freedom to shape sounds that are both delicate and complex. An excellent upgrade that turns it into a 3-oscillator synth.

A highlight of the new firmware v2 is the all-new 15-voice wavetable engine powered by 16 built-in Waldorf wavetables from the legendary PPG and Microwave.

This is an official collaboration between Sonicware and Waldorf. Joachim Flor, CSO of Waldorf, says: “This collaboration brings authentic Waldorf heritage to more affordable, compact instruments, inspiring musicians who might not yet own a Waldorf Synthesizer”.

It features 32 wavetable slots with 24 curated presets. Alternatively, you can import Xfer Records Serum wavetables into the engine. Of course, you have all the other engines, like the ZTRINGS physical modeling engine, SUPER OSC, and more.

The new v2 firmware for the Sonicware ELZ_1 play also introduces four fresh granular processors, along with formant, rack comp, isolator, mirage, and master compact. You can now work with 48 effect types.

There is also a new play mode, allowing you to select and control of preset patches.

Various other improvements and bug fixes, including the addition of Key Track to the Modulation section and multiple UI enhancements.

First Impression

The ELZ_1 piqued my interest back in its first version in 2018/2019. However, I’ve never tested the synth extensively. Now, with the ELZ_1 play v2, the developers seem to have given the synth even more possibilities. A detailed review will be available in the coming weeks.

Sonicware ELZ_1 play v2 is a free update for existing customers. It’s available for pre-order in a standard and all-black version: $599/$629, £539/£559, 699€/729€. The pre-order units include a bonus case.

Plus, it ships with the Waldorf Edition 2 LE plugin.

  1. To be clear, this is a firmware update for the EZ_1 play. I just updated and it works extremely well. An impressive update.

  2. You’ve made this sound like it’s a new piece of gear.
    It’s a firmware update.
Please edit this to include the fact that existing ELZ_play owners can upgrade to V2, with all the wave table goodness, for free.
    I think it’s a fantastic update.
I can’t wait to start playing with it over the weekend.

  3. Sounds nice, but I don’t quite get the pricepoint, compared to what say an Arturia Minifreak can offer in terms of sonic palette, sound, controls.
or a Polyend Synth (if one also needs drums).

    • Sonicware is a small company compared to the Arturia. (some people vers 200+)

MiniFreak doesn’t have a 4-track looper or can’t be used as a groovebox. Not everyone has to like it or sonically to like even buy everything. As long as we have a lot of choice, it’s nice.

  4. I almost sold mine but then this update came.
Now I really really like it. O I don’t use the looper or drum engine at all.
    Proudly digital 🥳
