There are plugins for every budget. Free, affordable ones, but also premium plugins like Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2, where a synth plugin costs 400€. HorNet from Italy takes a completely different approach. The company has a variety of high-quality plugins in its portfolio that they offer very affordable. On sale for €5 or even less.
Last year they caused quite a stir in the plugin community with their 24-hour free plugin promotions. They continue this in 2024. Today Hornet is offering its SpringVerb plugin as a free download.
Hornet SpringVerb
SpringVerb is an algorithmic reverb plugin that recreates the physical interactions of a spring reverb. Hornet’s take on a spring reverb gives you the freedom to tweak this interaction and the character of the entire effect.
First, you can modify the number of springs from one to three with which you can archive different flavors of spring reverbs. A setting with a single spring gives you, for example, a mono reverb with a bouncy character.
Then, you can set the intrinsic vibration time of the springs, which determines the length of the reverb. Tweaking the decay parameter creates a damping effect on the springs.
With the resonance and brightness controls right below, you can manipulate the self-resonance point of the spring and the highest frequency it can reach. They also affect how the reverb propagates inside the springs, says Hornet. Density allows you to tweak the sounds in more lush or metallic sonic territories.
Further, SpringVerb also comes with a classic dry/wet mix parameter. Not to forget, you can also load and save presets, using the two buttons.
The plugin does not require iLok. But you need a free account with Hornet, which can be created very quickly.
First Impression
Anyone who is looking for a high-quality spring reverb but doesn’t want to invest a lot, can’t ignore this deal. It’s probably not the deepest on the market, but it works well for a wide of spring reverbs.
Hornet SpringVerb is available now as a free download for 24 hours (reg. 12,99€) until February 8, 2024 (23:59 CET). It runs as a 64-bit VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
