NONO Modular Major Tom is a new, unique 4-track polyrhythmic performance sequencer module with expandability and hands-on control in mind

There are numerous Eurorack sequencers on the market, from very simple for a small budget to super complex for several hundred euros. The Eurorack market has sequencers to suit every feature wish list and budget.

Now a newcomer to modules is entering the market. with their first sequencer. The Italian boutique case builder NONO Modular has launched the Major Tom, a new sequencer with a unique concept on Kickstarter.

Major Tom is a new unique 4-track polyrhythmic CV/gate sequencer for Eurorack. Yes, this one is really special and not the 100th classic sequencer for your rack. According to NONO Modular, the core focuses on sequencing percussive sounds.

There are four tracks for CV/gate sequencer, each with 16 steps. To simple? No problem. Major Tom offers triplet steps at the same time as normal steps which allows you to create more complex and groovy rhythms. It’s the only land-based sequencer to provide this possibility, say the developers.

Another unique characteristic of the Major Tom sequencer is its expandability. If the four tracks are not enough, you can expand them to 12 tracks using expander modules. Something you haven’t seen before but it’s exciting that a company offers this.

NONO Modular also goes its own way when it comes to operation. They decided that you could control each track directly on the front panel with knobs.  So, it is less of a flipping game with a set of parameters for all four pages.

Each of the four channels gives you control over the pattern length, last step switch for polyrhythms, shift, directional time skipping, and up to 10 pattern variations. The last one is exciting because you can change a pattern instantly with a twist on a knob.

Another highlight of the sequencer is its center point, a circular screen and an orbit of 16 LEDs for the steps in which you can also set the triplets.

Other Features Are:

  • for each step of each track the gate is modulable both in length and in amplitude. These can then be sliced/fragmented into different parts and reorganized in different dynamics (straight, increasing, decreasing…)
  • quantized CV in different scales to tune or modulate percussive sounds like pinging filters, striking lowpass gates… clever addition
  • encoder for sequence speed and clock divider menu
  • clock out and reset out
  • clock in, reset in, and cv in
  • and more.

Here is an interesting demo that showcases the quantized CV functionality.

First Impression

Major Tom is definitely not another “more of the same” sequencer for Eurorack. The ability to expand it to 12 tracks and the hands-on control over each track right on the interface make it unique. The same applies to the triplets functionality and the built-in quantized CV.

With the latter, pingeable filter modules like Frap Tools Cunsa can be sequenced very smoothly.  Nono Modular has developed a very special sequencer here. I hope the module sparks people’s interest and it will be a success on Kickstarter. Good luck Pepè and the team.

You can support the NONO Modular Major Tom now on Kickstarter for a super early bird price of 690€. The early bird price is 726€, and the expected retail price will be 900€.
