sonicLAB Oceanic is a new bundle with a trio of software tools (plugins/standalone) that explores additive synthesis from sea waves.

Last September, sonicLAB released a very unique bundle of software exploring sea waves. Everyone who bought the bundle can look forward to another member of the bundle.

The developer has just published FlangerBot, a wild flanger featuring five individual flanger units with a feedback loop capable of going to extremes.

Like in the WaveBot synth, you can also use Oceanic to modulate parameters of FlangerBot. For example, the delay rate of each flanger. In combination, you can also generated bizarre filtering effects, and more.

Besides this, sonicLAB also has updated Oceanic, including various bug fixes.

This new update for the sonicLAB Oceanic bundle is free of charge for existing users. So the new FlangerBot is a free addition.

Sinan Bokesoy from sonicLAB is one of the developers who has the most special and unusual ideas for plugins on the market. For example, Thermo is a Synthesizer that brings the industrial, bizarre noise of self-regulating thermodynamic systems to your DAW.

Fundamental 2 is another novel synth plugin. It brings the sound of test equipment to the virtual sphere. There is a new bundle of software tools from sonicLab. Of course, it’s not a bread-and-butter synth but tools exploring new sonic fields.

sonicLAB Oceanic

sonicLAB Oceanic Bundle

After thermodynamic systems, sonicLab dives into the seas. The new release Oceanic is not just a single plugin; it’s a entire bundle with two plugins and a standalone application. Seas and sounds? You read that right.

sonicLabs new software bundle uses Gerstner’s wave solutions, a time-tested mathematical representation of sea waves. The core captures the essence of the ocean’s waves and transforms them into a symphony of additive sound synthesis. According to sonicLAB, it is capable of generating soundscapes that are as dynamic and ever-changing as the sea itself.

It includes three software tools: Oceanic app, WaveBot, and WaveCC.

sonicLAB Oceanic app

Oceanic App

The standalone application Oceanic is the foundation of the entire bundle. sonicLAB describes it as a sea-wave simulation powerhouse that generates intricate wave shapes. In detail:

  • Oceanic uses Gerstner’s trochoidal wave solution for simulating periodic surface gravity waves.
  • 5 periodic trochoidal waves and the superposition of them creates a basic fluid motion of a sea surface, fully controllable with parameters delivering rich variations.
  • Oceanic can use 5 arbitrary probes, surface points, to measure the wave surface height changes. At these points, we do scan the surface wave shape will be scanned horizontally and vertically, to create a 2D waveform data. (micro-time scale).
  • The user can also insert clone points around these probes. These clones will capture the relevant surface data around the center probe to create modulation sources on meso and macro time-scales addressing various synthesis parameters.
  • We can randomize the direction and strength of the surface waves to introduce some weather like phenomena in a continuous change.

You can spend a long time here generating evolving soundscapes/drones. It will be exciting if you can use this data from the Oceanic app for the other two plugins

WaveBot

The first plugin is WaveBot and is a wavetable Synthesizer that sources its data and modulation from the evolving sea-wave simulation. So it’s not your usual wavetable synth with classic sound sources.

sonicLAB WaveBot

WaveBot features classic features, including frequency control and frequency modulation, amp modulation, filtering, and more.

WaveCC

The third and last tool in the bundle is another plugin. Wave CC is a MIDI CC generator that derives its modulation data from the Oceanic app’s data.

sonicLAB WaveCC

This allows you to generate very exciting automation that you can apply to other plugins in your DAW.

Further, there is one more thing that is unique. The Oceanic app always communicates with the WaveBot and WaveCC plugins and sends its parameter state to them in real time. So the data you have in the synth or in the modulator FX is always in motion like the sea and is not static like a waveform.

You can host up to four WaveBot and WaveCC instances in your DAW giving you tons of sound design possibilities.

First Impression

A very fascinating software bundle from sonicLAB. This is definitely not “more of the same” but different and experimental.

sonicLAB Oceanic Bundle is available now for an introductory price of 89€ instead of 109€. Owners of sonicLAB Bot plugins can benefit from a special price of 69€. The discount prices are valid until September 21, 2023. Oceanic is a standalone app, WaveBot is a VST3/AU plugin, and WaveCC is a VST2/AU MIDI FX plugin.

  1. There is an older app that is producing similar soundscapes, but with a broader sound pallette and less parameters, called myNoise.
