Zoom PodTrak P4 is a compact 4-track audio recorder designed for podcasters and equipped with all the features you need for making shows on the road.
In the past few weeks, the Japanese audio company Zoom has been very busy. At the beginning o July the new “alien-shaped” H8 all-in-one mobile audio recorder solution (field recorder, podcast, recorder & audio interface), in the middle of July the V3 vocal processor and now the next new product. They seem to have taken podcasting to heart because the new PodTrak P4 is the second product in a very short time that has been designed or mobile podcasters.
Zoom PodTrak P4 is a new mobile podcast studio that makes it easy to capture professional-quality audio. The P4 joins the new Zoom podcast products. For example, the L-8 is also a multi-channel recorder for podcasters but is more designed for fixed recording setups. The P4, on the other hand, is a mobile device that you can simply take with you anywhere.
Compact & Loaded With Features
Zoom does not save on features on the new compact PodTrak P4 mobile recorder: four XLR microphone inputs with phantom power, individual gain controls and mutes, preamps with up to 70dB of gain as well as four headphone outputs with individual volume controls. These are located at the front of the devices. Each podcast participant thus has their own knob with which they can control their output signal. Very handy.
They have also thought of the situation when someone with a smartphone or laptop is connected to the podcast. This happens very often in the current situation in which we live. These participants can be added remotely. The P4 recorder lets you connect a smartphone/laptop… via a TRRS connection or even wirelessly via Bluetooth (BTA-2 Bluetooth transmitter/receiver required). Thanks to the new mix-minus feature, the device eliminates echo and feedback while recording phone calls. The Bluetooth function i
Creative Podcast Features
The device is used for podcasters, so it also has numerous features that are important and interesting for this area. Like on the new H8, you can also here trigger sound effects and music using the four assignable pads. It comes pre-loaded with 11 sound presets but you can also load your own audio files from an SD card. P4 supports SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards and records in 44.1kHz /16 bit wav. According to Zoom, all four microphones, the stereo sound pad mix, and the overall stereo mix can be recorded simultaneously onto separate tracks what is very convenient.
Also, the P4 can act as a USB audio interface for your PC, Mac & iOS device with two inputs and outputs. The recorder runs on USB power or two AA batteries, which last for up to four hours.
Zoom ZDM-1 Podcast Mic Pack
For all newcomers to the podcast world, Zoom has also announced suitable accessories. The new ZDM-1 Podcast Mic Pack features the new ZDM-1 dynamic microphone, ZHP-1 closed-back headphones, a tripod, a windscreen, and an XLR cable.
The Podtrak P4 is an interesting recorder in my opinion, which can be dangerous for some others on the market. It is compact, affordable, and feature-rich. This could be a hit if podcast interest remains so high in the future.
Zoom PodTrak P4 and ZDM-1 Podcast Mic Pack will be available in September 2020 for 254,04€ (+/- $300) respectively 138,04€ /$164 USD.
