Gotharman’s updates the unique LD 3 (Little deFormer 3) with a new firmware that transforms it into a unique 4 oscillators based percussion Synthesizer (drum machine).
Little deFormer 3 is an interesting granular workstation with 16 parts where each part can be a synthesizer, sampler or noise. Now the developer has presented a big update that turns it into a full drum Synthesizer.
Interesting: this feature update is not free but costs almost 150 €. According to the developer, he wants to cover the running costs for updates and new features with this extra pay updates. You get 4 new percussion oscillators, that will make it possible to use the LD3/Tiny LD as an advanced drum machine.
Percussion Oscillators
- Percussion Osc 1: 2 percussion waves, that can be detuned and modulated by FM noise and any other LD3/Tiny LD modulation source. Modulation of an Atk (Attack) parameter with an envelope, simulates the strike of the drum. Optimized for kicks, snares and noise sounds.
- Percussion Osc 2: same as 1, but modulated by squared FM noise. Optimized for analog-style hi-hats and cymbals.
- Percussion Osc 3: 2 percussion waves, that ring modulates each other, and that can be detuned and modulated by FM noise and any other LD3/Tiny LD modulation source. Modulation of an Atk (Attack) parameter with an envelope, simulates the strike of the drum. Optimized for hi-hats, toms and bell-type sounds.
- Cymbal osc: A small group of square wave oscillators modulates each other (in FM range) to create complex sounds like cymbals and metallic noises.
This license will un-lock the Percussion Synthesizer trial version, and make it possible to save and export presets, made with the percussion oscillators. After this has been installed, LD3 and Tiny LD will also no longer initialize the oscillator parameters, when switching oscillator type to a percussion oscillator.

This is well worth the “upgrade” … considering it’s firmware has gone from 8.1-12.1 in the time I’ve had mine, it’s constant development Novation-style.
It was already an enormously powerful, complex and interesting synth/sampler/sequencer … it’s now a ‘tackt as well as a ‘tone … with more audio/midi/cv i/o than I can shake a stick at. Terrific bit of kit … analogue and digital stuff with not a hint of reissue clone!
