The preenFM2 from Xavier Hosxe is a modern and compact clone of the Yamaha DX7 FM Synthesizer. It’s not an one-to-one clone of the iconic DX7 since the preenFM2 includes some clever and modern features. The developer released today a new software editor that allows to communicate more easily to the instrument over MIDI.

The new editor comes with a new re-designed interface adapted to fit to the firmware 2.0.8,  have the copy/past envelope feature and resizable window. It features also now a VST version that gives you more option to use it in your favourite DAW.

If you search a modern DX7 with modern features but don’t want to buy a old Yamaha DX7 than check out the preenFM 2 from Xavier Hosxe. I bought a preenFM2 on a second-hand music market and really like this instrument because it’s super powerful and compact. The menu is in my opinion not difficult and has a very intuitive design. With the new editor, it’s now even more easily to design own sounds than before.

One of my highlights of the preenFM2 is the possibility to insert a simple USB stick inside the Synthesizer where you can save thousands of presets from the DX7… via the classic SysEx file. Per example, I have currently near 1000 presets on my instrument and I found always new sounds to play. Also cool is that you can step very quickly through the different operator algorithms that gives you instant new sounds just by turning a knob.

Beside the new software editor, the developer also announced that the preenFM2 is available again as DIY kit or as fully build from the webshop Vandaal Electronics.

The preenFM DIY Kit cost 212€ and includes everything you need. An assembled version of the preenFM2 is also available for limited time for 300€ to 320€, also from the Vandaal Electronics webshop.
