Steinberg Cubase 14 DAW introduces a new pattern sequencer, flexible modulators, new shimmering delay and reverb FXs, and more.
November is already traditionally the month for updates from Steinberg. This year, there is also news from Hamburg.
Steinberg has unveiled Cubase 14 today with major new features.
Steinberg Cubase 14
Cubase 14 is a major update for Steinberg’s DAW and is again available in three versions: Pro, Artist, and Elements. You can explore all the new features in the Pro version, while the others offer only a part.
The new features in Cubase 14 put creativity first, enabling users to create music which is unique and innovative while making the writing, mixing, and production processes more inspiring and intuitive than ever before.
The drum track type addition is a big new feature of the DAW. At its core is a new drum machine, a versatile hybrid of drum sampler and percussion Synthesizer, and a flexible pattern editor. The latter allows users to build custom drum kits with dynamics, randomizing, and more. A feature available in the Pro and Artist versions.
Modulators & Effects
Modulators, which have been in Ableton Live or Bitwig for years, are now also available in Cubase 14 Pro. The new version introduces six flexible modulators for modulating any track or channel parameter containing an audio signal.
This is a major new feature that, among other things, includes an LFO and Step Modulator. It will help push the creative envelope of many music productions.
Then, Steinberg Cubase 14 Pro and Artists come with two effect processors. Studio Delay is a distinctive, easy-to-use delay surrounded by a set of built-in effects: modulation, distortion, reverb, and pitch.
The new shimmer effect is an ambient-style reverb that creates ethereal ambiances and dreamlike, reverberant spaces with a few clicks. In addition, you can explore the new Autofilter, a filter effect specially designed to modulate its cutoff frequency via the input track or sidechain signal.
Cubase 14 introduces Underwater, a brand-new signal processor for building atmosphere and space for vocals or lead instruments with the well-known “party next door” effect. Plus, a new volume effect allows control of volume independently of the MixConsole volume fader
New Score Editor
There are more new features. The full MixConsole can now be opened in the Lower Zone of the Project window, allowing channels to be re-arranged via drag and drop for faster, more intuitive mixing.
Steinberg also enhanced the event volume curve editing in the new Cubase 14 so that users can optimize their audio with draw tools that are familiar from automation editing to edit fades and adjust static event volume offsets.
Users also benefit from new Notation and Score additions. It introduces a new revamped Score Editor built on Dorico’s music notation and composition technology. It now offers a powerful, notation-based MIDI editor with deeper features.
Other New features & Improvements:
- DAWproject file format support for seamless project transfer between DAWs.
- The enhanced Range Selection tool provides many new functions and workflows.
- The play probability of each individual note in the Key Editor can be set to add variation to projects.
- Backup files are now stored in a dedicated Auto Saves folder.
- The performance monitor shows exactly when and where projects are pushing the processor’s limits.
- SuperVision now features more colors to visualize meters based on frequency or intensity.
- The Control Room has been given an aesthetic makeover.
- SpectraLayers Go 11 adds new spectral audio editing tools for music, sound design, restoration, and repair.
- Enhancements to immersive audio, including Dolby Atmos monitoring speaker layouts and support for up to fourth-order Ambisonics.
Further, Steinberg Cubase 14 benefits from improvements on the audio connection side, project management and import/export, enhanced video engine performance, and much more.
Steinberg Cubase 14 First Impression
So far, Cubase has been primarily a DAW for classical music production. However, with the latest updates, more elements from electronic music have been added. I am pleased to see that a drum computer and modulators have now been added to Cubase 14.
