Behringer packs the analog filter of his WASP Deluxe Synthesizer (EDP Wasp clone/replica) into a new WASP VCF module.
One of the first Synthesizer clones that Behringer introduced in its module series was the WASP Deluxe, a replica of the legendary EDP Wasp by UK synth pioneer Chris Hugget.
More than five years after its release, Behringer is now decoupling the popular raw-sound analog filter and packing it into a WASP VCF Eurorack module.
Behringer WASP VCF
The WASP VCF is an 8HP Eurorack adaptation of the legendary filter of the EDP Wasp Synthesizer from the 70s. It offers a pure analog signal path based on the original design.
Like the original Synthesizer and the Behringer Wasp Deluxe, the WASP VCF offers a multimode filter with lowpass, highpass, and bandpass modes. The module is manually controllable with cutoff and resonance. Alternatively, you can automate using the two CV inputs.
Then, you can find an audio input, two CV inputs (freq and CV2), a bandpass output, and a shared lowpass/highpass filter out on the front panel.
Wait, I know that module from somewhere. D… ah, Doepfer. Yes, the inventor of the Eurorack format, Dieter Doepfer, offers exactly the same module (A-124 Wasp Filter) in his portfolio. In addition, since last year, there has been a 4HP Slim version that takes up less space.
Since the new Behringer WASP VCF has exactly the same features and even the same outputs, it must be called a clone of the A-124 Wasp Filter.
First Impression
Well, putting a Wasp filter into a module is not rocket science, but it would be more interesting if it had 1-2 new features to have a unique selling point compared to the original. Now, the USP is the lower price.
If you can’t wait 2-3 months or more, the original A-124 Wasp Filter by Dieter Doepfer is available for just 88€ and even in a special edition. Oh, and it’s made in Europe. Alternatively, you can get the WASP Deluxe. It also has an external input and can be found on the second-hand market for 80-100€.
Behringer WASP VCF is priced at $49/49€ and ready for shipping from the factory. Its availability at retailers is TBA.
