Sampleson Tronic is a new drum Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows with drum synthesis and a generative sequencer.
When you hear Synthesizer, you immediately think of fat basses, bright leads, ambient pads, or Berlin-style note sequences. Synthesizers can also generate big drum sounds, which is called drum synthesis.
With the Tronic, Sampleson launched a new drum Synthesizer plugin that is very easy to use. The focus is on kicks/bass drum sounds
Sampleson Tronic
Tronic is a new drum Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows systems.
At its core it uses drum synthesis and not samples, so the engine is fully tweakable. It has two analog-modeled multi-wave oscillators with FM, hard sync, and a noise generator. They flow into a multimode filter with lowpass and highpass options and with cutoff and resonance controls.
There is also a simple top section for mixing the oscillators and noise levels. Then, you can find four decay envelope parameters for four different parameters: oscillator 1 gives you the typical kick sounds, filter, noise generator, and a fourth on the built-in VCA.
In the second half of the interface, Samples on Tronic hosts a 16-step sequencer with a twist: a note and a velocity section with swing, BPM, and sync options.
The parameters of Tronic are also fixed wired to the sequencer, allowing any parameter to interact with sequencer notes or velocity. A dedicated matrix is available on the right side.
A highlight of the Sampleson Tronic sequencer is its built-in generative engine. You can choose between one of three generation styles: Hit Maker for simple but powerful drum and bass-like patterns. Rave Master uses some features of the Hit Maker but adds sophistication to bass and synth patterns.
Further, Synth Hero prioritizes its generation on synth arpeggios and decorations.
First Impression
At first glance, it is a very user-friendly drum Synthesizer or, should I better say, kick drum Synthesizer plugin. It’s a shame that there is only one voice and one sequencer. Plus, the engine is only geared towards kick-like sounds.
If you are looking for sounds that do not come out of a sample box but from drum synthesis, this plugin could be interesting. However, it’s not the best plugin for you if you are looking for a complete drum machine based on drum synthesis. For me, Sonic Charge Microtonic is here the king, but it also costs more than three times more than Sampleson Tronic.
Sampleson Tronic is available now for an introductory price of $29 instead of $49. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
