Erica Synths Perkons Voice is an upcoming new drum synth module that brings the Perkons drum machine hybrid engine to Eurorack.
There have been a few smaller synthesizer events in the past few weeks. Knobcon, SynthFest UK, Machina Bristonica, and Montreal Knob Session 2024.
Erica Synths was also at the last two with founder Girts Ozolins. In addition to the announcement that the physical modeling synthesizer Steampipe is about to be released, Girts also had a surprise in its rack. The drum synth engine of the Perkons HD-01 drum machine will soon be available as a module.
Erica Synths Perkons Voice
Perkons Voice is a new drum synth voice module based on the hybrid synth of the Perkons drum Synthesizer/drum machine. Like the desktop instrument, the engine is hybrid and features different algorithms paired with an analog filter and overdrive.
The module offers the following algorithms, each with three modes:
- fold drum 1 (no transient, noise transient, pulse transient)
- wavetable drum (wavetable 1, WT2, WT3)
- simple drum (waveform 1, w2, w3)
- fold drum 2 (no transient, noise transient, pulse transient)
- complex drum (waveform 1, w2, w3)
- resonant drums (resonant snare, r. bass drum, noise /tone drum)
- slap (mode 1, 2, 3)
- karplus (mode 1, 2, 3)
- noise hat (white noise, metallic noise, pulse stack noise)
- noise/tone (mode 1, 2, 3)
- acoustic hats (closed hat, open hat, ride)
Once selected, the sounds can be tweaked directly on the module. Various parameters are available for this, including tune, decay, and more.
Also, in the module version, these algorithmic drums go into an analog multimode filter with lowpass, bandpass, and highpass. It’s fully tweakable with dedicated knobs. From here, the Erica Synths Perkons Voice drums go into an analog overdrive.
A highlight is the possibility of saving everything, both digital and analog signal path parts, in patches, which can also be recalled instantly in a performance.
Furthermore, all parameters have CV inputs to control them with voltages. You can even modulate the patch selection with CV. Besides this, you have inputs for the trigger and accent.
First Impression
The module is not official yet, but what I have heard so far sounds damn good and fat. If the price is fair, this new drum voice will be a big seller. With four such modules, you can build a modular Perkons HD-01 drum machine in your rack. That idea is very tempting.
