United Plugins Plamen is a new multi-band multi-type saturation plugin with built-in tape wow effect with an intro price of 19€ (reg. 89€)
Saturation plugins are used to add character and warmth to sounds. Especially when sounds are too clean, they are great tools to bring life to them. It is not only a mixing/mastering tool, also used as a classic effect to shape instruments.
Many saturation plugins spread their heat across the entire spectrum. United Plugins shows with their new Plamen plugin, a saturation that works on multiple bands.
United Plugins Plamen
Plamen is a new flexible multi-band saturator plugin for macOS and Windows with a 64-bit audio processing engine. The highlight is that you can apply warmth and character to each of the five bands individually.
It offers five distinct saturation types for each band, allowing you to choose the perfect color and character for your audio. It includes three classic analog-style preamp types, a tape saturation simulation (Magnetic), and a clipping algorithm.
One or all bands? Each frequency band can be soloed or muted (bypassed), giving you more flexibility in where to apply the saturation. On the bass frequency, to the midrange, or add sparkle to the high frequency. This is no problem for the plugin.
Four crossover points give you enough control of the frequencies you want to saturate. It is your choice what you consider subs, bass, low-mids, high-mids, and treble. The crossover works in two modes. You can switch between the Linear phase or the Analog 6dB/octave type.
Tape Wow
Then Plamen offers a built-in tape wow effect, a relatively slow form of flutter (pitch variation) known from vintage tape recorders.
Wide range of use
United Plugins says:
Plamen can be used on vocals and single instrument tracks, but also on master tracks. It is an excellent tool for sound designers and producers looking to experiment and create unique sounds. By applying different saturation characteristics to different frequency bands with different dry/wet ratios, you can create interesting textures, harmonics, and timbres that may not be achievable with traditional saturation techniques.
Even if the UI looks complex and deep with many knobs, the plugin is very easy to use. For each band, you have a row giving you the option to chose the saturation type, the bands-input, the parallel amount of color added (MOJO, and more.
Plamen also features up to 8x oversampling, ensuring maximum precision and pristine audio quality, a smart bypass option, and a clever sleep mode. So it intelligently detects whether it makes sense to perform processing at all. And if not, it temporarily turns on sleep mode.
First Impression
An excellent flexible saturation plugin. The possibility of addressing individual frequency bands is very practical. And for the intro of 19€, it’s not a bad deal either.
United Plugins Plamen is available now for an introductory price of 19€ instead of 89€. It runs as a VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (Intel + native Apple Silicon) and Windows. No iLok, no dongle, or internet access is required for activation. The software uses a simple license file.
