Boredbrain Music Patchulator Pro is a new portable passive patchbay giving you 10 channels for experimenting with signals and FX.
Using effects with synthesizers is fun and inspiring as they have the ability to enhance sounds or even push them in for you unknown sonic directions. It will be nice if you have more pedals and can build interesting signal paths.
But if you start experimenting with them, rewiring comes into play. A part of this fun that is not too interesting. But there are patchbays where you can discover new signal paths without rewiring your entire pedal arsenal. One of the most popular desktop patchbays, the Patchulator, has now been revised and is now available as a Pro version.
Boredbrain Music Patchulator Pro
Patchulator Pro is an envolution of Boredbrain’s popular desktop and pedalboard patchbay. The passive-designed unit features ten individual effects channels, plus a main instrument channel capable of switching between two parallel effects chains or bypassing them entirely.
Plus, you can patch instrument sources (and destinations) to any of these ten channels for direct patch access if the dedicated main I/O instrument channel is not enough.
The send (gray)/retrun (black) effects ehannels and main I/O are located on the back of the device and are 1/4-inch jacks. These are TRS connections and support stereo, mono, and balanced audio signals. So you can also work with stereo signals by using only one cable.
Patching happens at the top of the patch bay with 3.5 mm jacks labeled SND and RCV. Once connected to the back, the input signal is available on top at booth RCV patch points. There is no fixed routing, so you can freely create yours signal path.
A new and useful feature of Patchulator Pro is its dedicated instrument channel, which allows for quick access to one of two effects chains.
Further, there is a handy 3-way switch in the center allowing you to bypass both effects chains for A/B an affected signal agains the “dry” signal, and more.
Each Patchulator Pro unit comes with twelve Boredbrain patch cables, including 10-inch cables of two colors (green and black) made to differentiate between the two effects chains.
First Impression
As a big fan of FX pedals, I really like this release. Small patchbays are neat tools that encourage musicians to experiment with signals. You can also take a lot out of your existing effects setup as you can explore different signal paths in no time. No pedal unwiring necessary.
Looking at this release, I find the Pro version is a solid evolution of the first version. Alternatively, there is the DF Audio Minibay v2 with a more classic UI design and 12 inputs/outputs.
Boredbrain Music Patchulator Pro is available now for $219 USD.
