reFX has turned its massive EDM rompler Nexus with a free update 4.5 into a Synthesizer plugin with editable oscillators, effects, and more.
When it comes to the most popular synthesizer plugins, the reFX Nexus 4 is at the top. It’s a virtual instrument popular when it comes to having fat sounds ready with a few clicks. There are often discussions as to whether the Nexus is a Synthesizer or a romper plugin. I’m in the second group to be honest, as editing sounds has been very limited so far, which made it not a complete synth like Omnisphere, Serum, etc.
Today, reFX has released a free update 4.5 with which the developer opens up a good part of the engine to the users. A step that users have been waiting for already in version 1.0

Let’s start with the biggest change in Nexus 4.5. Yes, the sounds can finally be tweaked deeper. It introduces full visualization of the signal flow of the patch allowing quick edits. This includes a new oscillator inspector where you can tweak the oscillators with various parameters. This also applies to the modulation, layers, and FX sections.
You can also enable/disable entire layers with one click or even play with individual oscillators and effects. As you know it from every classic Synthesizer. This enables you to split complex SQ sequences into their components and single out individual sounds (just the bass, for instance) to easily create your own melodies. You have to take a closer look at how deep this editing goes. I think it will be limited in some way.
Then, reFX also gave the effects section a major update with a new editor with drag-and-drop support and a new black hole reverb algorithm. Another great addition is the possibility to export entire arpeggio patterns as a MIDI file. The Nexus 4.5 update also comes with many bug fixes, performance tweaks, and more.
A nice update for the Nexus that many have been waiting for for years. I almost stopped believing in it. Even though it’s now an almost complete synthesizer, the asking price remains a big thing. If you spend €3999 on a plugin + all expansions , you have to be absolutely sure it’s the right product for you.
reFX Nexus 4.5 is a free update for all existing Nexus 4.0 users. Nexus 4.5 is available now in different versions: Starter with 3883 presets (27GB) for 249€, Value 10 with the latest 10 expansions (50GB) for 499€, and Complete with 220GB for 3999€. It runs as a 64-bit VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (Intel + Apple Silicon) and Windows.
