DUB-Russell has released WTF!, an alternative granular beat-repeat FX firmware for the Noise Engineering Versio module.
Noise Engineering’s Versio modules are based on the Versio platform. A highlight of this is the ability to flash the entire module with new firmware in just a few clicks. Not only Noise Engineering but also third-party developers can release new firmware.
DUB-Russell, the maker of the 2020 THE SEMI MODULAR BEAT-MACHINE for macOS, has released an exciting new alternative firmware called WTF!
DUB-Russell WTF!
WTF! is a free alternative firmware for the Noise Engineering Versio platform. According to DUB-Russell, WTF! was originally developed for the 2020 THE SEMI MODULAR BEAT-MACHINE.
Once updated, the firmware turns the Versio module into a real-time stereo granular or beat repeat FX. It continuously records incoming audio, maintaining an internal buffer of approximately 90 seconds, breaks it into grains, and reconstructs it.
The module has three modes. In the center, you have the basic granular mode that splits incoming audio into tiny grains and replays them from shifting positions in the buffer. The repeat mode is a beat-repeat focus mode. Cloud is another granular mode with a softer, cloud-like texture.
Alongside these, you have three distinct grain playback modes: forward, ping-pong, and reverse. The firmware uses all the controls of the version. Both the modes and the grain playback modes can be selected with the switches.
Depending on the selected mode, the other controls have various mapped features. The grain engines offer grain size, distance, speed, jitter, variation (random variation), and probability. The beat-repeat FX offers controls for grain hold time, nudge, and more.
Further, you get full CV control over the parameters introduced with this alternative firmware.
First Impression
The alternative firmware WTF! sounds killer in the linked demo. Anyone with a Versio in their rack shouldn’t miss checking out this firmware, especially since it’s free.
The new DUB-RUSSELL WTF! firmware is now available for free download.
