Psychic Modulation has released MondoMelt, a new effects plugin that instantly infuses a Lo-Fi character into your sounds and tracks.
Lo-Fi effects, whether hardware or software, are currently booming. They take sounds back to when they were unstable, wobbly, crackled, etc. Back then, people wanted sounds to be as perfect as possible. Today, in a time when we have that, we want to go back—crazy times.
There are a lot of plugins that make this possible. They are becoming increasingly extensive and are a true sonic workstation for lo-fi timbres. Psychic Modulation takes a different approach with its new MondoMelt plugin. Fewer features but an instant lo-fi vibe with just a few knob turns.
Psychic Modulation MondoMelt
MondoMelt is a new Lo-Fi multi-effects plugin designed to create tape vibes on the fly quickly. For this, the developer took over the melting and tone-shaping engine of its Echomelt3 plugin.
It consists of seven different sections, starting with an input section with a built-in drive section for adding character and warmth right at the beginning.
A simple yet versatile 3-band equalizer with low/mid/hi controls and a lowcut switch allows you to fine-tune your sound perfectly.
Then, it offers a saturation stage with shape, level, and gain controls. You can add more warmth and distortion here if you didn’t get enough crunch from the input drive. There is also a lowpass filter for dampening the effect.
The next section is Melt, giving your sounds a lo-fi, wobbly character. It includes classic wow and flutter effects for creating instability, drifting, and pitch fluctuations.
Besides these, you can create audio degradation and stuttering volume drops, using the dropout function. Great for effects that imitate malfunctioning devices. Plus, the modulation speed is fully adjustable with two controls: frequency and random to add wilder tones.
Another sonic ingredient of the MondoMelt plugin is a built-in one-knob lush, stereo chorus.
Other features are custom GUI scaling, a one-button randomizer for all controls, and more. Psychic Modulation ships the plugin with some presets to get you started.
First Impression
There are tons of lo-fi/tape plugins on the market. Also free plugins. What I like about MondoMelt is that it is very compact and simple. Without overwhelming you with features.
Psychic Modulation MondoMelt is available now for $29 + VAT. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
