Behringer yesterday released a new video for their augmented reality interface for the DeepMind 12 Synthesizer. For explaining the concept of Augmented Reality: It’s an idea of using modern technologies like computers to display 3D visualisations. In the case of Behringer DeepMind 12 Synthesizer, the system show you visualisations of your filters, envelopes and animate your parameters to manipulate. Even this new technology allows users to play the DeepMind12 as laserharp.

From the technology point, the augmented reality of the Behringer DeepMind 12 Synthesizer is based on the Microsoft Hololens, a Windows 10 computer and a Leap Motion to sense your hand position.

For me personal, it’s an interesting idea how you can change your parameters in a new way in real time on your Synthesizer but the main question is: Is this future of controlling your synths?. In my opinion no, because you need a big amount of money to money high level infrastructure like a compatible computer, a special device like the hololens from Microsoft and much more. I think it’s a cool gadget for experimenting a bit with new ways how you can work differently with such devices but it will be not a standard in the music production.
Where I see big potential is on stage because in this case, spectators can watch in real time how the artists change the parameters on the devices and can understand why they made this changes in the settings. Also I see a valid point for synthesis workshops per example where a teacher can demonstrate students and workshop participants synthesis in a new and easy visual way.

What do you think about this new technology in the music world? Do you think it’s only a gadget or much more? Please leave comments on the website or on Facebook. I’m very interested to read your opinion.
