FRCTL Audio GRNi Lite is a new free granular sampler plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows based on the full version GRNi.

In early September, FRCTL Audio released the GRNi granular sampler/synthesizer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. It is based on the GRN granular engine but now comes as an instrument with some neat additions.

If you’re on a tighter budget, there is good news. FRCTL Audio has released GRNi Lite, a free version of its granular sampler plugin.

GRNi Lite is a new free granular sampler plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. It’s the free “lite” version of the  FRCTL Audio GRNi plugin.

This instrument is also based on the GRN granular engine, as the name suggests, but in a simplified form. Almost all features from the regular version have been omitted. The goal was to give users a very beginner-friendly granular tool.

A single sample slot remains available where you can drop a sample on the waveform. Once done, you can adjust the sample part where the granular process should be active, set its note and play it on the keys. Every note you hold grows its own cloud of grains from the recording.

You can’t adjust many settings, but you get the two best-known granular parameters to play with. SIZE sets how long each grain is, from grainy and glitchy to a smooth patch. Density sets how many grains play, from a sparse crackle to a solid cloud.

First Impression

A small, appealing granular Synthesizer plugin that allows anyone to take their first steps in granular synthesis. Yes, it’s meant to serve as an appetizer for the full plugin—but it’s great that they offer a version like this.

FRCTL Audio GRNi Lite is now available as a free download, with no serial number and no time limit. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel, Linux, and Windows.

The full version is $44,99 and offers a second sample layer, scale modes, modulation, and effects.
