mo0kid Mono Maschine Drum is a new combined desktop Monomachine/MachineDrum emulator that is controllable from the NI Maschine Mk3

Last week saw a wave of new Elektron Monomachine/Machinedrum emulators. However, none of them have yet matched the ergonomics offered by the original hardware.

A new project, though, could make them significantly more interesting. David John Whiting, aka mookid, has created Mono Machine Drum, a combined Monomachine/MachineDrum emulator that is controllable from the Native Maschine MK3.

The new Mono Maschine Drum is a combined Monomachine/MachineDrum emulator for macOS.

According to mo0kid, Mono Maschine Drum is based on an independent fork of Joe Landers’ Germanulator MD MM emulator and the Usual Suspects’ Gearmulator project.

Unlike Joe Landers’ project, this combines the Monomachine and MachineDrum into a standalone macOS application. Separate Gearmulator MD and MM apps and plugins are optional.

A key feature of this new fork is its integration into the Native Instruments MK3 hardware MIDI controller. Once you launch the app, it maps to the Maschine.

The left hardware screen shows the MaschineDrum (MD); the right shows Monomachine (MM). Both instruments keep running when you change focus

Then, the controls under each screen operate the focused instrument’s parameters. Plus, the strip lights mirror its steps and actions. Deeper menu functions are also mapped to the Maschine controls, enabling a fast workflow. A detailed list of the mapped functions is on GitHub.

The integration does not modify or flash the Maschine’s firmware, so using the app cannot brick the MK3 through a firmware update. You need the official ROM files of both units to run the combined emulator.

First Impression

Until now, using the MM/MD emulators with a mouse was a rather cryptic experience. These make the emulators much more hands-on. A very exciting project.

Mono Maschine Drum is available now as a free download on GitHub.

    • He created an emulator like the other that runs on macOS and created for it a MIDI mapping for Maschine. This doesn’t include the ROM or modify the actual firmware.

The Maschine runs as a MIDI controller for the emulator running on macOS. So no copyright infringement as he doesn’t anything on the actual ROM firmwawre. This doesn’t run on the Maschine

    • Elektron haven’t produced the monomachine or machinedrum in 10 years. The only revenue streams this project affects is the used market. (And a potential upsurge in Maschine mk3 interest)
I have not and will not touch the current product line of any manufacturer or developer. Nor do I modify or reverse engineer the firmware.
At this point, with no chance of Elektron restarting production of mm and md, they are in effect abandonware and this project can be seen as an act of preservation
