Hügelton Instruments Nikolator is a new physical modeling Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows, based on a musical Tesla coil.
Physical modeling synthesis is often discussed alongside modal synthesis, which uses exciters and resonators. However, PM is also used for many other tasks, like modeling pianos, guitars, and more.
Developer Hügelton Instruments has created something completely different using physical modeling in its new Nikolator plugin.
The developer discloses on the website that he used generative AI (Claude and Codex) for coding assistance and running the testing pipeline. However, he has created sound design, visual design, and all graphical assets.
Hügelton Instruments Nikolator
Nikolator is a new original polyphonic physical modeling Synthesizer for macOS and Windows. According to Hügelton Instruments, Nikolator’s main sound source isn’t a traditional oscillator but an engine that models the Tesla coil process itself.
The interrupter drives the resonant circuit, the discharge grows, energy transfers into the air, and that becomes the sound you hear. You can adjust the arc length, branching, and channel behavior in the dedicated coil section.
On the left side, you’ll find a performance driver section that comes with synth-like parameters, including octave and tune controls, burst, and more. With the dedicated, adjustable ADSR driver envelope, you can adjust its character.
Then, you have a paraphonic valve low-pass filter with resonance for shaping the sound. On the modulation side, there is a main ADSR envelope with curve control and a multi-wave LFO.
MIDI velocity, pitch bend, modulation wheel, and sustain pedal, with assignable modulation routing, are also available. A 4×6 modulation matrix manages all these modulators.
Nikolator ships with 22 factory presets that are available in a preset browser. The generated electric sounds are beautifully visualized within a virtual Tesla coil.
First Impression
A fun new physical modeling Synthesizer. It’s certainly not one you’d use to create an entire EDM track, but it’s interesting for making sound effects or noise.
Hügelton Instruments Nikolator is available now for $1. It runs as a standalone and VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
