Amiteque FM-01 is an upcoming desktop 4-operator Yamaha FB-01-style FM Synthesizer powered by a real Yamaha YM2164 FM chip.
FM has become a major topic again in recent years with the rise of FM synths that go beyond the 6-operator DX-7 synth design and offer new possibilities and more accessible user interfaces.
Many also prefer a simpler approach with 4-operator FM synths like the Yamaha FB-01, DX21, or others. Amiteque, the developers of the AR-110, present the FM-01, an FM synth that revives the retro 4-operator charm.
Amiteque FM-01
The FM-01 is a new desktop FM Synthesizer that focuses on the classic 4-operator FM architecture. Important: The FM-01 is not the FM-1. Both are FM synthesizers, but the latter without the 0 is the $60 DX-7 mini synth from M-Vave.
Amiteque FM-01 follows a different FM concept. Rather than a DX-7 FM emulation, the FM-01 uses an actual Yamaha YM2164 IC chip (OPP) that provides the 4-operator FM engine found in the Yamaha FB-01, for example.
Judging from the knob-free interface and the details on the website (unfortunately AI-generated!), it seems to me they’re trying to revive the style of the Yamaha FB-01 synth as a modern synth. It’s like a modern FB-01 clone.
It has a 16×1 display, and dedicated front-panel buttons for voice and instrument selection, and more.
According to the info, it preserves the character and architecture of classic digital FM synthesis while replacing the original control system with a modern microcontroller-based interface.
4-Operator FB-01-style FM Synthesis
Internally, the FM-01 features eight FM voices, each with four sine-based tweakable operators with eight FM algorithms. It also has an LFO with four waves, mappable to pitch per channel and/or amplitude per operator.
Unlike a digital emulation, the Yamaha silicon produces the algorithms, the register behavior, and internal timing of the engine.
Since this uses the original Yamaha YM2164 IC as its basis and the developers forgo an FM emulation, it will likely lack effects and other modern features.
On the back, you have stereo output via two 6.3mm output jacks, 5-pin MIDI IN/THRU/OUT connectivity to integrate it into existing setups, and a power supply input. The FM-01 has full MIDI implementation, so you can also edit sounds with an editor or a MIDI controller.
First Impression
I’m currently sitting in front of my Yamaha FB-01, a 4-operator FM synth that I bought secondhand for almost nothing. I rarely programmed it because the interface was anything but hands-on and fun.
Thanks to Full Bucket for releasing the free FB-02 plugin that simplified programming. With the FM-01, Amiteque is following the same path as the FB-01 in both sound and operation. Personally, I don’t need that button-based workflow anymore.
For me, “hands-on” in 2026 means turning knobs. Programming using only buttons feels too 1980s. It’s great that someone wants to revive classic 4-op synthesis in the old-school style. However, I’m not sure many people today would want a control scheme similar to the FB-01.
Amiteque FM-01 availability and price TBA.

I also have an FB-01, and they’re so common and the hardware generally doesn’t have any failure points so I struggle to see the market for this since they can’t possibly beat a second-hand original on price. I’ve had mine for so long because it’s honestly not worth the effort to sell it, it’s too cheap.
The FB-01 can’t even be programmed without an external MIDI editor, and it doesn’t look like this can either? The FB-01’s killer points were multi-timbrality and low price even when new, so they’ll have to re-implement the multi-timbrality too.
I wonder how any of these can compete with the cheap FM-1 from M-Vave that can run all the DX7 patches.
Personally I find the FM-1 a bit too tiny but with the price I couldn’t resist like many.
These are really two different concepts. The M-Vave FM-1 offers a lot for its price, especially if what you want is DX7 compatibility and access to a huge library of existing patches.
The FM-01 is going in a different direction. It is built around an original Yamaha YM2164 OPP chip, not a software emulation. It is based on the same original Yamaha hardware used in the FB-01, DX21, DX27 and DX100, so it represents a different branch of classic Yamaha FM synthesis.
Our idea with the FM-01 is to bring that particular hardware architecture into a modern desktop instrument with convenient control and editing.
So we don’t really see it as a question of competing with the FM-1 on price or number of patches. They simply offer different things.
those synths without any controlls – i cant see the point
It does have controls 🙂 The FM-01 provides full control, including voice editing directly from the front panel, MIDI control and full SysEx support. It’s definitely not just a preset box.
So it’s not an improvement at all in terms of interface for a synth that has been out for decades and can be had for less than $150?
I see absolutely no point to this whatsoever.
That’s perfectly fine if you personally don’t see a point in it.
However, the FM-01 is not simply a recreation of an older synthesizer in a new box. It has a completely new analog signal path, and we are currently working on adding several additional features that were not available in its direct predecessor.
This is exactly why we decided to share preliminary information about the FM-01 while it is still in development, rather than simply bringing a finished product to market. We want to hear what musicians think, what they would like to see, and which features would actually be useful to them.
Feedback like this is part of that process.
Please keep it going Amiteque Electronics Canada. I have plenty of sequencing gear. The Drum Synth and this FM 1 are exactly what I have been wishing for. Keep going and developing simple, well manicured modules! Totally my taste on all fronts. And they are perfect for my recording club.
Thank you so much! This really means a lot to us. Simple, carefully designed and useful hardware modules are exactly what we want to create. We are especially happy to hear that the AR-110 and FM-01 would be a good fit for your recording club. Comments like yours give us even more motivation to keep developing!
We have published the first FM-01 demo on our website. Please listen to it here:

Sounds great. Love the music. Is there an artist attached to the music? Also would one be able to control parameters in this using the BCR 32 from Behringer?
