All The Machines The Remnant is a new FM drone Synthesizer plugin for macOS, Windows, and iPadOS with a feedback matrix.

Update: the iOS version is out now

All The Machines has several exciting FX plugins in its portfolio. I particularly like using False Memory on my iPad to degrade and mangle sounds in various colorful ways.

After releasing the SKIIID percussive synth a few years ago, the developer has now released his second Synthesizer called The Remnant.

All The Machines The Remnant

The Remnant is a new feedback-matrix-based FM drone Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows. The developer says an iOS version with AUv3 support is coming soon. It is not stated whether AI was involved in the development.

It consists of eight FM voices that modulate each other through an 8×8 arbitrary feedback matrix. On a dedicated page, you have full control over it with topology presets: Pairs, Ring, Star, Mesh, Chain, Random.

The network topology itself is the instrument. Depending on it, you get different sounds and behaviors.  Signal circulates, persists, and refuses to die. You create conditions for sound to persist.

On the main page, you control each oscillator/voice: pitch, fine, level, and morph, which continuously morphs between sine, triangle, saw, and noise. The engine supports 2x oversampling for alias-free FM. It also includes a drift engine for organic pitch movement.

Sound Design & Performance

From the FM engine, the sound goes into a resonant body/acoustic filter with four distinct flavors: chamber, cave, metal, and voice. Think of it as a resonator-like filter. You can refine the sounds with a multi-FX processor with saturation, space, and air.

All The Machines The Remnant features 8 touch pads that allow you to play each individual voice separately—much like on the Soma Lyra-8 or Neural Labs Elmyra 2. In this setting, you also have attack-release envelopes.

Scale-aware pitch quantization with 13 selectable scales is also available so your playing is musical. Further, it has a touch XY surface on a dedicated UI page with 11 assignable destinations. This lets you play the parameters in a performative way.

A snapshot system captures and recalls the entire sound state (voices, matrix, effects…). This is not a preset, but you can glide smoothly from one to another. This is a perfect feature for creating complex feedback drones.

First Impression

At first glance, it’s an exciting FM drone Synthesizer with plenty of interesting sound-design options. The only thing I don’t really like is the UI; it feels a bit too dark.

All The Machines The Remnant is available now for an introductory price of $19 instead of $29. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel ) and Windows.

The iOS version is out now for $4,99 and runs as a standalone and AUv3 plugin.
