AI Synthesis AI250 BXR is a new audio mangler and CV generator module for Eurorack inspired by Nuclear test equipment.
AI sets off alarm bells for many. Don’t worry, AI isn’t a topic here, even if the company bears the two letters. AI stands here for Abraham Ingle, founder of the Portland-based Eurorack company AI Synthesis.
Besides his fascination with modular synths, he is also enthusiastic about vintage test equipment. With the AI250 BXR, AI Synthesis has now developed a module that lets you explore this world right in your rack. It’s the first news for Knobcon 2026.
AI Synthesis AI250 BXR
The new AI250 BXR is a new 14HP eurorack module that is heavily inspired by the Boxcar Averagers, which is classified these days as vintage nuclear test equipment. It was designed to acquire and analyze fast signals.
More specifically, the module draws its main inspiration from the SR200 NIM series, especially the SR-235 analog processor.
AI Synthesis says that the AI250BXR is an audio mangler, a CV generator, and even a VCO. It is based on the flexible Daisy Seed and its Daisy Patch platform, and it’s the company’s first module to use it.
The AI250 specifically replicates the real-time mathematical portion of a Boxcar Averager System and processes audio or CV signals against either another signal or its internal v/o variable wave-shape VCO. The latter has 11 different CV-selectable wave shapes that can be played v/O.
Full Manual & CV Control
It doesn’t look like a digital module, as it offers many control options and no menu diving or anything like that. The Function and Argument knobs on top control multiple mathematical comparators and operations.
Then you have two input levels, with the second doubling as oscillator pitch. Controls also include built-in distortion, oscillator shape, and dry/wet blend. With a switch, you can also switch between audio and modulation rate for the LFO.
On the bottom, you also have plenty of CV inputs and outputs, including a patchable wave shape and oscillator shape knob as well as CV control over the argument and function knobs. Geiger gates are also onboard.
You can route audio into the module via two audio inputs, and the results go out via the separate main and oscillator outputs.
The sonic colorization the module creates is beautiful: it fattens the sound, makes it nasty and crunchy, and adds harmonics. It sounds like sending the signals through multiple broken radios that shape them in a very pleasing way.
First Impression
A lovely, highly unique module that can produce some really wild, nasty sounds. It’s great to see such experimental releases. It’s sure to be a lot of fun to try out.
