Xfer Records has ported the legendary Pink Trombone browser speech synthesizer into a free plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
Most people know Steve Duda of Xfer Records for his collaboration with Deadmau5 and mainly through the Serum 2 Synthesizer. Besides releasing the first beta of Serum 2 for Linux, he has another treat for the music production community this summer.
Xfer Records has ported the legendary Pink Trombone browser web application into a free plugin.
Xfer Records Pink Trombone
In 2017, Neil Thapen developed Pink Trombone as a web application. It is an interactive vocal tract model and speech Synthesizer that is fully adaptable, with parameters like pitch, intensity, and more.
For a tool to be considered legendary, it must have widespread recognition in the music production world. This is the case. Over the last decade, many musicians have sampled the original Pink Trombone for their tracks.
This goes from fun cartoonish sound effects to EDM productions. Now, you can explore all this fun speech synthesis right in your DAW. Xfer Records/Steve Dua has created free-of-charge VST3 and AU plugin ports of Pink Trombone.
And it’s not just a 1:1 port; he also gave it new features. For example, alongside the original web app’s visual playground, it now includes dedicated Voice, Tract, and Play sections where you can tweak voice characteristics like breathiness, tone, and articulation.
Further, he also added a modulation engine with four AHDSR envelopes and four multi-wave LFOs that you can assign to various parameters.
On top of that, the new Pink Trombone also comes with a dedicated FX version that lets you run any audio through the same vocal tract, giving you even more sound design options.
First Impression
Steve Duda is known for the occasional surprise (see Serum 2 as a free update). Pink Trombone, adapted as an Xfer Records plugin, is also one and certainly the developer’s funniest release so far. Check it out, it’s worth it
