Steinberg celebrates the 30th anniversary of VST with a free update for its free Steinberg Classics plugins for macOS and Windows.
Everything has a beginning. Even the VST format. Thirty years ago, in 1996, the Hamburg-based company Steinberg released the first virtual instrument equipped with the VST interface. The story that followed was told by the format itself, with thousands of releases.
Today, Steinberg celebrates VST’s 30th birthday with an update to its free Steinberg Classics plugins.
Steinberg Classics 30th Update
Introduced by Steinberg in 1996, VST was designed to create a professional studio environment for PC and Mac computers, allowing the seamless integration of virtual instruments, effects, and audio processing tools into any VST host application.
This groundbreaking format gave developers a standardized, open way to create plug-ins that could run inside compatible DAWs, while enabling audio creators and producers to radically expand their production capabilities and revolutionize digital music production.
The first VST releases came from Steinberg themselves, and these have been available as free downloads under the Steinberg Classics banner for a long time. To celebrate their anniversary, the classics have received an update.
New features or new engine, no! Steinberg is keeping things very vintage and the same in that respect. As a plugin purist would say: only vintage plugins have the best sound.
The new update, however, brings VST3 support to the plugins. In the bundle, you can find the CS-40 polyphonic Synthesizer, the Neon, the world’s first VA Synthesizer, the LM7 retro drum sample unit, the VB-1 bass instrument, as well as the Karlette vintage tape delay.
First Impression
Happy Birthday VST! 30 years is a very long time, and it shows no signs of ending. It’s a great idea for Steinberg to revive the Classics as VST3.
The only slightly annoying thing, especially for non-Steinberg users, is that they’re now hidden behind a gate. You need an account, a newsletter subscription, and the Steinberg Download Assistant. I could have done it all without that.
The Steinberg Classics are available now as a free download from the official website. An active Steinberg account with a newsletter subscription is required. They are also now bundled with the Download Assistant software.
Alongside this, they have an anniversary sale from August 4 to August 24, offering discounts of between 50% and 60% on HALion and a wide range of VST instruments for Mac and Windows-based DAWs
