Reason Free by Reason Studios is a new free version of its Rack plugin with 15 instruments, effects, and players/utilities.
With the release of the Rack plugin a few years ago, Reason Studios made its iconic instruments, effects, etc., accessible for the first time to people working in other DAWs.
With Reason Free, they go a step further, offering the Rack plugin as a free plugin with 15 tools and Rack extension support.
Reason Free
Reason Studios is taking a new approach with the Rack plugin. Moving away from being exclusive to Reason users or those who purchase the plugin, towards making it accessible to everyone.
Reason Free is a free version of the Reason Rack plugin that runs in any DAW as a VST3, AU, and AAX plugin.
The Rack plugin is a modular sound environment or synthesizer where you can create your own instrument or effect combinations. You can flip the Rack, patch virtual cables, split and merge signals, create macros, and more.
You get more than just the Rack; you also get a handful of free devices. It brings 15 Reason instruments, effects, and creative utilities that you can use for free in the Rack plugin – with no trial, expiration, or watermark.
Europa synth + 14 Other Devices
At the center of the new free version is Europa, Reason’s powerful wavetable synthesizer.
Built around three spectral wave engines with advanced waveform shaping, modulation, and effects, Europa includes more than 600 patches to help you quickly find an inspiring sound.
It also includes the Kong drum machine, ID8 packed with songwriting instruments, and Monotone, a great-sounding monophonic synth.
Alongside these four instruments, the free plugin also ships with five classic devices: Scream 4 distortion, The Echo, Audiomatic, RV7000 MKII reverb, and MClass Maximizer.
And of course, the rack plugin should also include some players and utilities. Among other things, you get scales & chords, the legendary Combinator, the dual modulation device Pulsar, and more.
Rack Extensions For All
Reason Studios intended to offer an alternative to VSTs with the Rack Extensions format many years ago, but this wasn’t entirely successful. They later decided to support VSTs after all. However, the Rack Extensions format and the market have remained.
With the introduction of Reason Free, they are opening the Rack Extension marketplace to every user. Producers can further customize their Rack by choosing from hundreds of additional free and paid instruments and effects from Reason Studios and independent developers.
This is a step the format has needed for a long time. It’s finally here. Now everyone can use Rack Extensions like Reason’s own Objekt Synthesizer and others.
On top of that, Reason Free also comes with the Reason DAW with up to 16 tracks, giving music makers another way to create within the Reason environment.
Reason Free First Impression
Making the Rack plugin freely available, with a limited selection of beautiful devices, is a welcome decision by the new management. I also like that the RE format is now accessible to everyone. Hopefully, this will give it a boost after a long time.

This is great.
After Cubase on the Atari ST, it was Reason 4 & 5 that really got me into having fun making music with PC’s.
Nowadays I’ve been using a combo of Reaper and MPC.
I’ve always missed the rack format of Reason.
I’m really looking forward to getting this and having a good play.
Interesting strategy. As I push with my migration to Reaper and ignore an upgrade to Reason 14, I’m curious if Reason is hedging their bets, equally pushing into “VST for other DAWs” territory, in case Reason 14 doesn’t gain traction like they hope.
Not for everyone available, unfortunately we still see discrimination of Linux users in 2026.
