Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 mini is an upcoming reboot of the SV-1 semi-modular Synthesizer in mini format, coming in early 2027.
Last week, Pittsburgh Modular released the new Lifeforms SV-2, the evolution of the original SV-1 semi-modular synth. However, the original SV-1 lives on.
A few months ago, they showed the first prototypes of several classic PM synths planned in a mini format, including the Voltage Lab. The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 mini is now finished and will go into production soon.
Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 mini
The Lifeform SV-1 is one of the most popular synthesizers released by the American company led by Richard Nicol. The Lifeform SV-1 mini brings back the Pittsburgh Modular synth in a more compact form.
It probably won’t be a large global release like the SV-2, as the first batch is planned to consist of 300 units, which Pittsburgh Modular will sell itself via a possible pre-order system.
The mini version has all the features of the original Lifeform SV-1, with a few minor improvements. It features two VCOs: one with five waveforms and one with four, including the unique Blade waveform, PWM, thru-zero FM, exponential FM, and hard sync.
As a reminder: the Blade is a special waveform that creates a sawtooth variant, offering dense, natural chorus effects by manipulating harmonic content. For extra depth, it offers two sub-oscillators (-1 and -2).
Then, it offers dual, chained mixers, an analog Pittsburgh Modular state-variable multimode filter, two LFOs, and a plucky, MIDI-controllable four-stage envelope generator. Plus, it has a VCA, a splitter, and a dedicated output stage with main in and out and phones output.
On the left side, you have handy modular tools like an advanced MIDI-to-CV interface with TRS-A MIDI input, built-in arpeggiator, and outputs for CC, velocity, pitch, gate, and clock I/O.
All details about the changes in the mini version aren’t available yet. However, Richard mentioned in a short video that the LFOs have been adjusted based on user requests.
First Impression
The original SV-1 was a great-sounding, flexible semi-modular synth. It’s great that it’s making a comeback as a mini version. I only wish it had a lower price point, especially given the huge number of semi-modular synths currently available on the market.
It might be because Pittsburgh Modular manufactures these themselves, rather than in a larger factory like the SV-2, which makes it more expensive. For everyone who has always wanted the SV-1, this is an opportunity starting in early 2027.
Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1 mini will be available in mid-January 2027 for $599 (retail). That is $200 less than the original SV-1. Production should finish by mid-December, and they should ship to buyers in mid-January.
The first run will be 300 units, and they want feedback on whether to do pre-orders.

Because it’s a remake of the original SV-1 with no major changes. Like the Dreadbox re-issues
when they had that instagram poll, i wish people had voted for the voltage lab and the microvolt instead of the sv-1, not a bad synth but its just too standard if that makes sense, microvolt is more interesting than the sv-1 to me.
