Groovesizer AcidBoxMynah is an alternative firmware for the Mynah sampler that turns it into an acid groovebox.
The Mynah is a compact, affordable polyphonic sampler powered by the popular ESP32-S3 microcontroller. You can purchase it as a DIY kit or assembled unit. I reported on it in March.
Groovesizer contacted me today to say that there is now an alternative firmware called AcidBoxMynah that turns it into a different instrument.
Groovesizer AcidBoxMynah
AcidBoxMynah is a new free, open-source (MIT License) firmware that turns the Groovesizer Mynah into a TB-303-style groovebox.
Switching the firmware is super easy. Owners can flash AcidBoxMynah straight from the Mynah web app’s firmware tab and swap back to standard Mynah firmware anytime. More importantly, your samples on the microSD card are not affected by this change.
AcidBoxMynah is built on copych’s open-source AcidBox project and gives it a full physical UI on the Mynah hardware – 24 tactile switches, an 8×2 NeoPixel grid, OLED display, and a single pot.
The instrument consists of two TB-303-style synths plus a TR-808-style drum machine. The synths feature controls over the filter cutoff, resonance, envelope mod, accent, as well as built-in wavefolder and overdrive.
On the other side, the drum section includes high-pass/low-pass filters and bit-crusher effects. All three elements are then routed through send effects and a master compressor.
AcidBoxMynah also has a 16-step sequencer with per-step note, accent, and slide editing, scale quantization, swing, and manual sequencer mode. The original autonomous Jukebox mode is also onboard.
Further, you have parameter automation for the synths (16 lanes) and the drum (8 lanes). Other handy additions are: runtime drum kit browsing, per-voice muting, and pot-lock to prevent accidental parameter jumps.
First Impression
The Mynah is a very exciting, feature-rich sampler. It would be a bit too small for my needs, but AcidBoxMynah looks like a great alternative firmware that makes the sampler even more attractive.
