Ghost In Translation Drone is a new Eurorack drone Synthesizer module for Eurorack with four multi-algorithm voices.
I just got back from a 1-week experimental music camp where I participated in many drone and noise sessions with both synth and acoustic instrument players and singers. Here’s a news item that fits this trip perfectly.
Ghost in Translation has released Drone, a new Eurorack synth voice designed for big, versatile drones.
Ghost In Translation Drone
Drone is a new 8HP stereo four-voice drone Synthesizer for Eurorack. According to Ghost In Translation, the Drone module’s digital engine, powered by a 32-bit float DSP, is open-source and available on GitHub.
Four voices, but not in a block; each is fully independent. The module comes with 16 distinct algorithms to choose from:
- Sine-Resonant Noise, Resonant Noise, Sine-Phaser-Ring, Sine-FM, Saw-Comparator, Slink Filter, FM & Wavefolder…
You can tweak the engines with the shape control that has a different macro-style function depending on the chosen engine. For example, in the Sine-Resonant Noise. you can blend from pure sine tones to wind-like resonant noise.
You can also work with FM via the patch points. Drone also features a built-in looper to record and loop knob movements up to 1 minute, or 32 bars when synchronized to a MIDI clock. This lets you easily bring in movement in your drones.
A built-in auto calibration feature keeps your oscillators in tune.
On the connection side, you get stereo output, 1V/oct pitch CV inputs for each voice, and CV inputs for the mix, shape, and FM. So, you can also use the module as a classic digital oscillator. It also includes MIDI TRS Type A IN and OUT.
First Impression
An exciting module that could certainly be interesting for experimental modular setups where the focus is more on drones or noise.
