Toybox Audio Thump One is a free dual-layer Synthesizer plugin for kicks, basses, and leads. Update 3.0, with wild new features, is now in public beta.
In 2023, Toybox Audio released Thump One, a free synthesizer for macOS and Windows. The iPadOS version isn’t free. The title says it all: It’s a Synthesizer plugin specifically designed for hard-hitting sounds—kicks, bass, and leads.
Toybox Audio has announced version 3.0 of the synth, featuring some neat new features. macOS users can already test the public beta.
Toybox Audio Thump One 3.0
Thump One is a free Synthesizer plugin. Visually, the plugin is very distinctive. This look isn’t limited to Thump One; it’s also found in the other Toybox Audio synthesizers. This also has a particular workflow that stands out from other plugins.
At its core is a dual-layer engine: Kick and Layer. Kick uses a hard-hitting wavetable oscillator, with a set of wavetables created from a selection of clean and processed analog kick drum sounds.
You can fine-tune and shape the wavetable oscillator with features including wavetable position, saturation unit, a filter, and a buzz circuit to add a buzzy, broken-speaker-cone effect.
Layer is the second layer/engine and is based on an emulation of the legendary Roland JP8000 Supersaw oscillator. It comes with various operation modes (FM, dirt, fifth, noise, squelch, and more).
These configure it to play in intervals and add various amounts of modulation to achieve various timbres. Powerful is the built-in modulation engine that gives you a multi-segment modulator for each parameter. Plus, there is an AR envelope.
What’s New In Version 3.0
Version 3, or Update 3.0, of Toybox Audio Thump One is about to be released. It introduces various neat new features.
Along the bottom of the refined GUI is the new MIDI strip hidden behind the keyboard, an expressive playground for jamming.
Right-click a key to map various triggers and panels to it, such as arpeggiators, note repeaters, chord generators, LFOs, CC mappers, snapshot switches, and more. Once done, you can trigger the specific function with the key.
It’s fun to map the random function to it, so that each key press produces a new random sound. A very creative, performance feature that I hope will also be included in the other Toyboy Audio plugins.
Then, update 3.0 also introduces snapshots, which let you store complete variations of a sound (parameters and envelope shapes) within a preset. You can create up to 64 snapshots per preset and smoothly morph between them. Also a super fun function.
Furthermore, it improves editing of the multi-segment envelopes. They now feature lasso selection, a right-click menu, and per-envelope presets with flip and reverse options. Additionally, it fixes bugs from previous versions
First Impression
I downloaded the beta version and the new features are a lot of fun. They bring a breath of fresh air to the free plugin and make it pretty wild. Depending on how you work with the snapshots and the MIDI strip, things can get very crazy. Super fun update, thanks!
Toybox Audio Thump One is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows. Update 3.0 is now in public beta available on the website. The iOS (AUv3) version is out now for $3,99.
