reFX is teasing a new Synthesizer plugin, and it could be the commercial version of the Rippler physical modeling synth
At the beginning of the year, Tiagolr released Rippler, a powerful physical-modeling synthesizer similar to Chromaphone 3, as a free download. Some time later, the plugin disappeared because the developer reached an agreement with a development company to release it as a commercial product.
This next step now seems to be happening. ReFX is teasing a new Synthesizer plugin, and there are many indications that this is the Rippler under a new design.
reFX plugin – Rippler Pro?
The Rippler Synthesizer, released as a free plugin earlier this year, was very similar to the Chromaphone 3 synth in many ways. It has two resonators that extend beyond CH3, two exciters (mallet and noise), and more.
In the first teaser video that ReFX released today, many elements of the Rippler plugin are recognizable. For example, the structure is very similar. In the middle, you have the two resonators with controls for decay, release, material, and tone.
On the left side, you can see the exciter sections, including the impulse and the noise generator. They have the same location as in the Rippler plugin. The resonator strength slider is also identical.
Unlike the original Rippler synth, the reFX version features two additional wave folding oscillators and two multimode filters on the main interface. The latter has controls over the cutoff and resonance plus a built-in drive.
There is also an option to modify the filter routing of the new oscillators and the resonators.
The modulation engine, however, is almost identical to the original layout. It has four envelopes, four LFOs, random generators, and more, all of which can be assigned via drag-and-drop. Velocity, key tracking, and aftertouch are also onboard.
It is unclear whether the FX section from Rippler has been integrated into the new ReFX Synthesizer
Early Impression
Where the plugin still works perfectly, I really enjoyed using Rippler as an alternative to Chromaphone 3. I found the workflow very good and easy. I don’t know any details about ReFX, but the teaser clearly indicates it’s the commercial version of Rippler.
I’m curious to see what other changes have been made. Stay tuned for the full news.

I’m all for this. Chromaphone is excellent, and so is Rippler. I’m happy to pay for a physical modeling synth because there are relatively few choices out there right now compared to go many VA and FM synths we have.
