naturarum Pond is a new AUv3 MIDI sequencer plugin for iPadOS/macOS that turns wave-like movements into melodies.
The iOS App Store is currently flooded with new releases. Many of these are apps from new developers who are taking advantage of the new possibilities offered by AI tools. The sheer number of new releases is absurd. Sorry, I won’t be able to cover everything.
I will continue to cover interesting releases. One of them is this one. Victorien Genna, or Naturarum, yes, another new developer, has released Pond, a new AUv3 sequencer with an original idea.
Looking at the speed of updates and app releases – already the second within a month, with a third on the way – it’s clear that AI tools are being used to code this app. This is the new reality.
naturarum Pond
Pond is a new AUv3 sequencer plugin for iPadOS and macOS. However, naturarum Pond is not a classical hardware-inspired sequencer with 16, 32, or 64 steps.
Victoria Genna pursues a very original idea here, involving throwing a stone into water. The resulting ripples trigger musical melodies. Please don’t throw a stone at your expensive iPad. It’s done virtually here, with a single- or multiple-finger touch that triggers the whole thing.
The interface features a playground that can be filled with cells, each of which holds a note. You can fully customize them, giving them any key possible, using scales, or an octave range. When a ripple’s wavefront crosses it, it sounds.
Rippling Sequencer
Depending on where you tap and how the waves overlap, it becomes a new composition. You can also tap with multiple fingers to trigger multiple events.
Pond also has a feature called an emitter. Instead of manually triggering the ripples, this happens automatically. All emitters can trigger simultaneously, or each can trigger differently.
You can set individual parameters for each emitter, such as rate, allowing you to generate very complex patterns. Another lovely feature is the interference, which gives the ripples the behavior of real water, so a more organic feel.
All the parameter settings can be saved in presets for easy recall. You can use Naturarum Pond as a standalone MIDI sequencer. In this case, it has a built-in 16-voice soft-sounding pluck synth.
Better: host it in your favorite DAW as an AUv3 MIDI sequencer and trigger other apps with it and make music with ripples.
First Impression
AI opens the door to development for many who can’t code. Among the current flood of new apps, Pond is certainly a highlight, as it’s original and looks like a lot of fun.
Naturarum Pond is available now for $7,99 on the Apple App Store. It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iPadOS and macOS (native Apple Silicon)
