MIDISID by MIDI IN is a compact 6-oscillator SID synthesizer, and you can now program it via a dedicated physical control surface
For several years now, the British indie company MIDI_IN has been offering the MIDISID, a SID-based mini Synthesizer with two built-in SID recreations.
The hardware offers four potentiometers for navigating the menu and operating the synth. This is not the most pleasant programming experience in my opinion.
There is something better: MIDI IN has just released a dedicated control surface for the MIDISID synth.
What Is The MIDISID?
The MIDISID is a compact Synthesizer with two Kung Fu SIDs built-in. It has six voices, each with four oscillator waveforms, oscillator sync, PWM, and ring mod.
It also has a multimode filter (highpass, lowpass…), an ADSR envelope per voice, and more. All three voices and their parameters can be edited using the four knobs or a MIDI editor.
MIDI_IN MIDISID Control Surface
For those who prefer a hands-on approach, a dedicated MIDISID control surface is now available. This is developed by the same developer. The new surface consists of clicky buttons, smaller knobs, and sliders, giving you almost full control of the engine.
On the left side, you can choose the operation mode (poly, mono, duo…). Depending on the chosen mode, the control surface will have a different configuration.
Then the right side is completely dedicated to the three voices. Each section has buttons for the waveform selection, and sliders for adjusting each ADSR envelope.
On the far right side, you also have another row of buttons that activate features like sync and ring mode for each voice. Dedicated detune parameters (coarse, fine) per voice are also available.
Take a look at the left middle side. Here, you have the filter section with buttons for the filter selection and knobs for tweaking it.
And finally, you have another section for activating other voice behaviors, including an arpeggiator.
First Impression
Building a dedicated control surface for a SID synthesizer is a niche topic that doesn’t interest many readers. However, it’s great that MIDI IN, the developer behind this project, created one for those who want hands-on control.
