Melatonin Sine Machine is a new additive Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows that promises to be easy to use and fun.
Last October, Melatonin, a new plugin company based in Vienna, released Sine Machine. It’s a new Synthesizer that aims to make additive synthesis accessible and fun.
After a long early access/public beta phase, Sine Machine has now been officially released. MPE and microtonal support via MTS-ESP are now onboard.
The feature highlights are:
- Harmonic arpeggiation, for animated, cascading patterns.
- Per-harmonic control over envelopes, volumes and pitch (including creative glide modes).
- Additive Reverb, built from 1000 additional sine waves.
- Additive “filters” including brick wall and gaussian bandpass shapes.
- Per-harmonic gaussian pitch noise for organic and lofi textures.
- 140+ factory presets.
My criticism that there was only an online authorization option has since been addressed. The plugin can now also be registered offline on up to three computers.
The Melatonin Sine Machine is now available for $75. It runs as a VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows. AAX support is not yet available.

Additive synthesis is undoubtedly one of the most unusual forms of synthesis. Instead of using a subtractive approach, new, complex sounds are created by adding individual sine waves and other elements. This form is neither widespread nor popular.
This is because many additive synthesizers (hardware and software) are neither inviting nor intuitive to use—hundreds of parameters where you quickly lose track and interest.
Melatonin, a new software company based in Vienna (Austria), the city of music, is trying to change that with the new Sine Machine plugin.
Melatonin Sine Machine
Sine Machine is a new additive Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows, described as friendly. Indeed, the user interface is very inviting and colorful. More importantly, you will not be overwhelmed by a parameter wall when you first open.
At the core of the Melatonin Sine Machine plugin is a bank of 20 voices, each with 511 time-domain oscillators, for a total of over 10.000 oscillators. Ok, that sounds like a lot of parameter tweaking. Don’t worry, it’s been simplified.
Instead of tweaking individual oscillators, you edit them in bulk, making it easier to stay in focus. The UI consists of five areas that can be easily accessed with tabs: volumes, envelopes, trem, pitch, and voices.
At the volume level, you draw and edit the amplitude of the time-based oscillators in a spectrogram, as is familiar from other additive synthesizers. Purple represents lower frequencies, and red gives you the highest.
Additionally, you have drawing utilities, including additive filtering tools (brickwall and Gaussian band-pass). The result is directly visualized above.
Friendly & Nerdy Modulation
Then you can edit an ADSHR envelope with an offset, which also works in the same bulk approach. You control them for all. Sine Machine also allows you to delve deeper.
With the envelope’s Curve Control, you can precisely define how the envelope affects the oscillators. You can really nerd out there and go even further with the advanced mode.
The tremolo and pitch sections let you modulate amplitude and pitch independently with a syncable multi-wave LFO. Oh, wait—it’s not one—you get access to over 10,000 LFOs, as each oscillator in each voice has its own free-running LFO.
With features like offset or other tools, you can edit the modulation to avoid harmonic collisions. These two sections are where it gets interesting and where the oscillators gain motion. You can achieve a wide range of sound effects, including filtering, swarming, arpeggiators, and more.
In the voices section, you can adjust all the main parameters of your patch, like the voicing (mono, various unison modes, or randomize) or add glide time that can affect in different ways. Further, it offers MPE and microtuning support for MTS-ESP.
Melatonin Sine Machine ships with a factory-preset library you can start experimenting with.
First Impression
At first glance, Sine Machine is an inspiring additive Synthesizer with a very accessible, friendly user interface. I like that the plugin appeals to beginners with its colorful interface and to additive synthesis experts with its deeper features accessible with a few extra clicks.
According to the developer, it’s a soft launch, and offline authorization and full MPE implementation are coming soon.
Melatonin Sine Machine is available now for an early-access price of $50. The developer doesn’t participate in Black Friday deals or similar promotions. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

cool and very interesting synth but better than all those pages and big graphical representation of sound —
to have a one page option interface with all parameters, cmon developer we have 4k monitors today and we precept sound by ears, no need of such big wave screen to use half of the interface

This might be the most accessible format for additive synthesis I have ever seen. Props to the developers.
Counter-argument: I’m glad it’s not all stuffed into one page. I don’t have a 4K monitor (2x ultrawide at 2560 x 1080, one above the other, which is still more than a typical PC), and those are about two arm’s lengths away out of necessity so I can put more gear in front of them. And I don’t have the keen eyesight or the patience for tiny little text and controls either.
Anyway, I’ve been enjoying this synth since early access. It’s a lot of fun and sounds gorgeous 🙂

the GUI is nice too , so inviting and clear .
Pitch is LFO only? No other controls? Env? Spread? etc?
Don’t expect what we see in other synths, it’s a different way. So no modulation matrix, there are some connections between env and Pitch or Trem. Sure sometimes I would like some internal routing, but it can be solved with automation. And the synth has so many qualities and innovative ideas that it’s no problem at the end.
