Manu Riga Drift Ritual is a new free Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows with an organic drift and a fat sound.
In recent weeks and months, dozens of new synthesizers have hit the market. Many are free, and many of them were created using AI tools. There are still exceptions.
For example, Drift Ritual from Manu Riga is a new free synth that was painstakingly coded by hand.
Hand-Coded in 3000 Hours
Drift Ritual is a new free Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows. According to Manu Riga, Drift Ritual is built for producers, composers, and sound designers who love rich atmospheres, evolving textures, expressive pads, and more.
There are several signs that a plugin could be created with AI. One of them is the user interface, which often appears generic rather than original, as well as the use of morphing colors. I initially thought the same about this synth until Manu Riga contacted me to correct me.
He wrote to me about the long hours of work and handcoding he put into the synth. Much of it was created during his current time as a cancer patient. During the development, he also got support from sound designer Marc Barnes.
The UI was created in JUCE, where many others also built their user interfaces, including the vibe-coded ones. Since the palette of options is not as extensive as building interfaces from scratch, many plugins look similar today.
What Is Manu Riga Drift Ritual?
Drift Ritual is a subtractive Synthesizer with distinct monophonic and polyphonic modes, including unison and superwave
The core uses two PolyBLEP oscillators with band-limited waveforms. According to Manu, he wanted oscillators like those in the Jupiter-8 and Matrix 6 that have a nice warm drift character and excel when playing chords.
In a dedicated advanced panel, you get control over the independent oscillator levels, vibrato speed, pre-drive, and detune. More advanced sound design is possible with built-in PWM and audio-rate cross-modulation (Xmod), along with a dedicated envelope mod shortcut.
Alongside the two oscillators, it also has a multi-wave sub-oscillator with an octave transpose option as well as a white-to-pink noise generator. The latter has envelope shaping and a fixed pitch mode.
Shape The Sound
From here, it goes into a multimode filter with body. It houses not one but two distinct filters. The first is a traditional analog-style filter with lag and ladder mode with lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and LD.
Next to this is a vowel filter with amount and morph controls that adds rich harmonics to it by creating vowel effects.
On the modulation side, you can work with two ADSR envelopes and two flexible LFOs with various modes. Both modulator types comes with multiple assignable destination. A neat extra: there is a LFO depth envelope with which you can also add drifting motion to the modulators.
Besides these, there are also other modulation sources: four assignable bipolar macro controls, velocity, aftertouch, noise, mod wheel and full MPE support.
Sound refinements can be done with a built-in multi-FX section. Bloom is an advanced harmonic delay, Space Center is a lush, reverb, Erode a bit-crusher and motion FX a phaser.
Further, it has an arpeggiator with a chord mode. A built-in patch randomizer gives you instant new sounds and hopefully instant inspiration.
Drift Ritual First Impression
I downloaded the plugin to take a look for myself. It’s easy to use, and you can quickly find your way around. The sound is rich and fat, great for big synth pads, soundscapes, and textures.
The factory library currently contains over 100 sounds. These include many high-quality timbres that not only sound big but are also so inspiring that you’ll want to play them for extended periods.
Even though the user interface doesn’t completely win me over, Drift Ritual is an excellent free synth that shouldn’t be missed.
Manu Riga Drift Ritual is available now as a free download. If you enjoy the synth, please leave a donation to support Manu Riga’s work. It runs as a VST and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

You are Windows users? That’s a usual issue with Windows. Works fine on macOS.
