Lese Fletcher is a new texture-generation FX plugin for macOS and Windows, based on smoothing time.
From smoothly morphable multi-mode distortion and unique spectral processing to reverbs from uncharted territories, Lese Audio has released many original, fascinating FX processors in recent years that are anything but the 100th thing you’ve seen before.
The latest release picks up where it left off. Lese Fletcher is a new unique spectral processor plugin for creating textures.
Lese Fletcher
Fletcher is a new spectral processor plugin for macOS and Windows designed for smoothing time. One thing I like about Lese plugins is the compactness of their UIs, and Fletcher is no exception. It has a perfect mix of size and ease of use.
At its core is a spectral engine that takes the current signal’s frequency spectrum and uses it as a target to slowly morph the output sound over time.
Attack and decay are the main parameters of this process. They are based on their signature Factor Bands system, in which each frequency section of the signal can have its own attack and decay, smoothly ramping across the spectrum.
The contouring of the smoothing processor can be modified using the factor-band controllers. There is also a fitting control that automatically selects non-uniform parts of the spectrum and levels them out.
Turn it negative, and you can have sort of spectral contrasts, infusing an additional layer of shaping prior to the attack/decay system.
Adding Color And Depth
Additionally, Fletcher can also add extra sound acting as a “decay”, adding extra sound over time for the morphing to continue even after no sound is coming in.
In the middle of the UI, you also have a “shimmer control. It’s not a shimmer reverb but has something to do with pitch. It auto-detects the pitch of different incoming sounds, and adds extra harmonics on top of the signal for extra shine.
Neat, the shimmer processor can also take external MIDI notes. So it takes the harmonic generation as a basis instead of using pitch detection
Wash makes the output noisier by slightly modulating the volume of each frequency, while Blur turns the individual peaks into more general noise, making the wash effect less apparent.
Lese describes Fletcher as kind of like a compressor, but also kind of like a reverberator, but not really either one.
First Impression
Fletcher looks intriguing because you don’t immediately know what it is. It’s not a plugin you already have in this form. The smoothing creates interesting effects reminiscent of textures, unusual reverbs, compression, and even spectral filtering.
It’s one of these more experimental FX plugins that you only learn through heavy experimentation and see what it really can do. It’s great that Lese continues to create such unusual, inspiring FX; thank you!
