FRCTL Audio GRN 3: free update 3.2 turns the granular FX into an instrument, adds macros, more controls, and more.

Over the past few months, the FRCTL Audio developers have significantly expanded the GRN granular plugin, including the addition of a multi-FX processor. One might wonder: is there still room for more?

FRCTL Audio says yes, and has released another free update, version 3.2.

Update 3.2

Version 3.2

Yes, it continues. GRN 3.2.0 out now and is again a free update with new features for its granular FX plugin. As a reminder: it captures audio into a rolling buffer and rebuilds it as a cloud of overlapping grains.

A highlight of GRN 3.2.0 is the addition of a new macro system with four freely assignable macros that is available on the right side in a dockable panel. You can assign as many targets as you like to one macro knob, each with its own depth.

Additionally, they come with two XY pads that allows you to play two macro control in a more creative way.

Version 3.2.0 also turns GRN into a polyphonic granular instrument with the new MIDI pitch mode. It helds notes retune the grains to pitch, each with its own attack/decay/sustain/release envelope and velocity response, and a sampler-style root key keeps it in tune with the source material.

Important this is off by default. This is joined by a new GRN MIDI AU version that exposes note input to Ableton Live and Logic Pro, while the plain GRN AU keeps working as before for existing sessions.

More Depth

Also new is the stacked modulation where an LFO, an envelope and a macro can now drive the same knob at once. They have offsets that adds together instead of one replacing the other. Nice, the filter resonance is also now fully modulatable.

Another new powerful feature is the buffer library with which you can save a frozen grain-source buffer under a name and reload it in any project, independent of parameter projects.

There is also a new optional LFO play mode that locks the phase of each LFO to the DAW timeline. And there is a redesigned header in the UI, making easier to navigate.

A very exciting free update for the GRN plugin. Anyone who bought the plugin on day one has already received a lot of new features. That’s for sure.

FRCTL Audio GRN 3.2 is out now and a free update for existing users. The plugin is out now for $34,99. Good news: you can now download a free 14-day trial to check out the plugin.

Update

Update from June 6, 2026

FRCTL Audio’s GRN is one of the most exciting yet affordable granular processors on the market. Through constant updates, they continually make the processor more powerful.

Update 3.0 or more precisely 3.0.1 is already out

Update 3.0.1

Update 3.0.1

The new version 3.0.1 is out now and introduces several new creative featues as a free update.

After installing the update, you will probably see some changes int the UI. Yes, they have redesigned the interface with a larger canvas, new segmented controls, a unified top bar, and more. There are also new features to explore.

First, you can work with two new ADSR envelopes that with drag-and-drop modulation support. These are also triggerable from the audio input or on every grain, turning them in audio followers.

On the top section, you have grain visualizer. This now has a new fun feature. A new step mode turns it into a 16-step sequencer with per-step subdivisions and swing. So more modulation for the granular processor.

It also brings more controls to the resonance, a 12/24 dB slop on the main filters, and a sixt control on all the 10 FX rack effects, making them more versatile.

Update 3.0.1 also adds new functions, including an A/B compare and an undo/redo with up to 64 steps of history.  On top of that, you get 40 new presets totaling in 140+ factory presters. Good: they now also hold the modulation.

Another great free update for the GRN plugin.

Update

Update from Mars 6, 2026

At the end of February, I reported on the new version of the FRCTL Audio GRN granular processor, which is now solely a multi-FX processor. Version 2.2 is now available, offering even further improvements.

Version 2.2 adds DAW sync to the LFO and new retrigger options, while eliminating clicking with square/saw waveforms. The new update also introduces a redesigned harmonic system.

The previous 6-mode system is replaced by two continuous knobs, Scatter (how many grains receive harmony intervals) and Direction (up, down, or both), across four modes: Off, Octaves, Fifths, and Oct+5th.

Then, there is a new freeze hold function that keeps frozen audio playing after the transport stops and a new mix lock that preserves dry/wet when browsing presets – a very handy addition. Moreover, a new settings panel adds options for text size (S/M/L).

Once updated to FRCTL Audio GRN 2.2, you can also explore 51 new factory presets across 11 categories. You can now also work with subfolders to organize user presets into nested browser menus.

FRCTL Audio GRN 2 Lite

Better GRN Lite

There is also a free version called GRN Lite, which was also improved with version 2.2. The new Lite version adds 7 magic modes, including Shimmer, Ghost, Swarm, Decay, Glitch, Dream, and Default.

Each one changes how the grain engine behaves with a single click. A new engine visibility feature lets users see what the grain engine is doing in real time, removing the guesswork from each control. A great free update for both versions!

FRCTL Audio GRN Lite is available now as a free download. Version 2.2 is out now as a free update. It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP  for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It’s a one-time purchase with lifetime free updates.

Update

Article from February 23, 2026

In recent months, there’s been a wave of new granular effect plugins. One slipped through the cracks on my news radar: FRCTL Audio GRN.

Now I can finally catch up because FRCTL Audio has released GRN 2, a free major update with great new features.

Frctl Audio GRN

What Is FRCTL Audio GRN?

GRN 2 is a granular FX plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. FRCTL Audio has embraced the “less is more” approach with GRN 2.

The granular engine is very immediate, requiring only a few parameters, thus preventing musicians from being overwhelmed during sound design. It has six main grain parameters: spray, size, DAW-sycnable density, spread, pitch, and mix.

According to the developers, every parameter is tuned for musical results out of the box. The freeze option on the spray parameter lets you lock the buffer for evolving textures.

Additionally, you have pre/post highpass and lowpass filtering, a jitter control with a reverse option, and an output leveler.

Also onboard is. a pitch shifting section with quantization to a chosen scale. You can select from nine different ones: major, minor, pentatonic, and more. The focus here is also very much on the effect’s musicality.

Then it houses a flexible feedback engine that allows you to route the grain output back into the buffer, perfect for infinite sounds. The feedback character is fully tweakable with width, delay, and wobble.

You can spice up the sounds with a saturator with three modes: warm tube, crunch, each with a drive control. Plus, you can use another set of HP/LP filters that is applicable to the pre-, post-, or both signals.

New In FRCTL Audio GRN 2

The GRN 2 version is free for existing customers, and according to FRCTL Audio, updates are free for life. That’s very welcome, and the new update is impressive.

A highlight is the all-new FX rack on the second UI page. It transforms the simple granular FX plugin into a multi-FX processor. It has 10 freely reorderable slots, each of which can hold an FX.

These are the available effects: bit-crusher, chorus, delay, reverb, flanger, distortion, phaser, tremolo, utility, and filter. Each slot has per-effect animated visualizers, bypass toggle, and WET/DRY/BOTH routing to process the granular output, the dry signal, or both.

Further, GRN 2 introduces a modulation engine with two independent syncable LFOs offering sine, triangle, square, saw up, saw down, S&H, and random waveforms. Plus, you get bipolar depth control for inverted modulations.

You can route them to any parameter by simply dragging and dropping. An LFO can carry multiple destinations. Lastly, it now ships with 49 presets organized across seven categories.

First Impression

At first glance, a great update for the GRN plugin. The multi-FX section and LFOs set the plugin apart from other, simpler granular FX. It’s very positive that this is a free update, the price is very fair, and it includes Linux support.

An iOS version would be very welcome. FRCTL Audio, if you’re reading this, the iOS users would be thrilled.

FRCTL Audio GRN 2 is available now for $29.99 (one-time purchase, lifetime free updates). It runs as a VST3, AU, and CLAP  for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It’s a one-time purchase with lifetime free updates.

  1. Thanks for your constant reporting on new developments! May I suggest a comparison / overview of the most state-of-the-art granular plugins for iPads, Ableton Live Max4Live and VST/AU ? I lost track and fear that I am not using the latest and greatest granular tools! An overview article would be very appreciated!

    • compare all the tools take me at least a week of work or more. So I have to stop report on all the other stuff. Difficult for a one-man operation.
