FRCTL Audio Aura is a new multimode reverb plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows that puts the focus on clarity in your mix.
Offering macOS, Windows, and Linux support simultaneously isn’t the norm, sadly. But it is with FRCTL Audio. The developers have recently released some exciting plugins, including the granular processor GRN and the flexible delay DLAY.
Both of these plugins allow you to create reverbs, but they lean more towards the experimental side. If you prefer a more classic approach, read on. FRCTL has released Aura, a new reverb plugin that covers traditional ground and focuses on clarity.
FRCTL Audio Aura
Aura is a new reverb plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. FRCTL Audio Aura looks like a traditional, bread-and-butter reverb, but it does some things differently.
On the reverb menu, it has seven distinctly voiced algorithms: room, plate, hall, chamber, bloom, shimmer, and space. This covers both classic tastes and those curious about more modern, unusual reverb timbres.
The reverbs are fully customizable with familiar core parameters, including independently controllable room size and decay time as well as pre-delay and early reflections. You can dial in a tiny room that rings for 20 seconds or a massive hall that decays instantly.
The tail on Aura is also more advanced. Tools like width, diffusion, fuse, and reverb give you different ways to shape it. Fuse, here the more unusual control, features a 1.6 kHz Fuse dip for lead separation and a tempo-syncable reverse mode.
The Clarity Engine
A highlight of Aura is its clarity engine that lets you move the reverb around what you’re playing. It automatically turns down the reverb tail by a precise dB amount, and the moment you pause, the room blooms back organically.
So, no extra signal routing like sidechain compression or auxiliary busses. It all does that right in the plugin. Four dedicated shaping sections give you full access over the clarity engine.
In the main Clarity section, you can tweak the Duck Lows, which is simplified low-frequency ducking to eliminate mud in your sound or track. Extra control is available via the adjustable attack and release envelope.
One step further, you have the Tune & Drain section. Two knobs but with a big impact, especially if you are not a note-shredder. This clears lingering older notes from the tail during fast melodic lines to prevent harmonic clutter.
Just below, you tweak the “Absorb and Swell” function, the third part of the clarity engine. It automatically shortens decay during busy phrases and expands it during gaps for effortless dynamic throws.
Fourth and final is an integrated noise gate great for gated snares and clean, abrupt cuts.
Further, FRCTL Audio Aura features an output section with a mix and dry/wet mix controls. Plus, there is an EQ with real-time visualization.
Aura Lite
There is also a free version available. Aura Lite gives you all seven characters with size, decay, mix, as well as the clarity control of the Clarity Engine. Turn it up, and the tail steps back while your source is playing. You can run it wetter than you normally would.
First Impression
There are reverbs everywhere, both free and commercial. I think it’s great that reverb developers are trying new things, like the Clarity engine that’s built directly into Aura. On paper, it looks like a nice reverb unit where the price is also very fair.
